The Amalfi Duomo Webcam is Back!

Many thanks to my Mom who alerted me this morning that the Amalfi Piazza Duomo webcam is back online. Great news!! This is my favorite webcam on the Amalfi Coast, due in no small part to my love of the Duomo of Amalfi. (In fact, I wrote my masters thesis on that lovely facade you see up there.) ...

Ruins of the Basilica di Sant’Eustachio

Since starting Ciao Amalfi last month, I have already had the pleasure of meeting so many friendly and interesting people who, like me, share a love of this part of the world. Reader Chef Chuck, whose family heritage is from the Amalfi Coast area, left a comment to a post earlier this week asking ...

Sunshine After the Snow

I woke up this morning to find a beautiful and sunny day on the Amalfi Coast. The day seems even brighter with the sun shining on what is left of the snow from yesterday. Enjoying the sun this morning, I noticed that, despite the terrible wind yesterday evening, the neighbor kids had made a charming ...

Snow Snow Snow!

While I was at the desk writing this morning, something strange outside the window caught my eye. "Are those snowflakes?" I thought. Yes, it was actually snowing out my window! I thought the first few snowflakes would be the end of the story, but for about two hours it got increasingly heavy until ...

Le Frane on the Amalfi Coast

Photo from Positanonews.itAn important word to learn about life on the Amalfi Coast is la frana, or landslide. It is a word you hear very often, especially this time of year after the winter rainy season. Along the roads you will see minor frane, where a small section of the retaining wall of a ...

Stormy Weather

The strange weather continues here on the Amalfi Coast. Yesterday it hailed! It was unusual to look out the window and see the garden almost white when it ended. It rained and hailed, and we would have quite the pile of snow if it were just a little bit colder. Today the weather was cool, clear and ...

The power of the sea

Yesterday, while on an afternoon walk down by the port of Amalfi, I happened across a very large pile of stones. Hum, strange. It took just a moment, however, to realize that they had come from one of the piers in the port, which has been damaged by the strong sea and storms in the past week. The ...

La Festa della Candelora

Earlier today I was feeling a bit bad for all my complaining about the rainy weather here. Tomorrow it is predicted to be rainy and cloudy again, but this time I am happy! So why the change? Tomorrow is Groundhog day! I have just learned that here in Italy there is a similar tradition, called Feast ...

What 31 days of January morning walks looks like. What 31 days of January morning walks looks like. It’s been gorgeous and windy and stormy and wild - and everything in between. Should I pick a different spot to take a photo a day next month?
Non Amalfi Coast question. Do you wake up in the m Non Amalfi Coast question. Do you wake up in the morning with music or a song in your head? I do nearly every morning and it’s curious to me what shows up. Usually it’s something I’ve been listening to, but sometimes it’s really random, like someone’s left the music room door slightly ajar in the brain. This morning it was a jaunty version of “Loch Lomond” from the 1940s sung by Maxine Sullivan. (You’d think that would be from the random category but I actually listened to it yesterday.) So that’s what was swinging about in my head as I took a walk early this morning. 🎶

Musing On The Roaring Ocean
by Robert Burns

Musing on the roaring ocean,
Which divides my love and me;
Wearying heav’n in warm devotion,
For his weal where’er he be.

Hope and Fear’s alternate billow
Yielding late to Nature’s law,
Whispering spirits round my pillow,
Talk of him that’s far awa.

Ye whom sorrow never wounded,
Ye who never shed a tear,
Care-untroubled, joy-surrounded,
Gaudy day to you is dear.

Gentle night, do thou befriend me,
Downy sleep, the curtain draw;
Spirits kind, again attend me,
Talk of him that’s far awa!

This morning—after four days of rainy and cloudy mornings—I watched sunrise over the Cilento coastline across the Gulf of Salerno. Late morning it started raining again and it hasn’t stopped. This little pocket of beauty was exhilarating!
