The Weather Plays the Tricks on April Fool’s Day

It was a beautiful sunny morning. “Ah,” I thought,  “The first of April, and a perfectly lovely day for the boats to start running.” Standing with my morning cup of tea, I watched out the window as a boat surprisingly crowded with passengers headed into the port of Amalfi. Today the Travelmar Linea Intercostiera Amalfitana service started for the new season, with boats running between Salerno, Amalfi and Positano. Prices for these ferries are very reasonable (between €6-10) and the service is quick and easy – and not to mention an extremely beautiful way to see the Amalfi Coast!

Feeling optimistic about lovely spring weather, I went to the desk to work, with thoughts of a nice afternoon walk in mind. But while I wasn’t looking, the weather pulled an April Fool’s Day trick on me. Before I could say “Pesce d’Aprile,” the clouds came. And then the wind felt left out and decided to come for the laughs. Raindrops were just falling on my head as I went out to bring in the mail.

Oh, well. Isn’t that just spring for you? Hope you all are having a trick free day. And watch out for becoming the Pesce d’Aprile!

Buon pesci d'aprile! I'm sure Amalfi is just as lovely in the spring rain as it is in the sun! The "servizio di barca" seems a great idea, especially after having been on "la strada" from Praiano to Amalfi – che incubo! Although very lovely it is quite the exprience and not for the faint of hear. I think I would much rather take the boat …imagine that it would be much faster and no giant tour buses to deal with!

Oh yes, April fools…but we were in Amalfi a week last June and the weather seemed to change without notice then! We left for Positano one fine morning, and when we returned in the late afternoon, the wind, rain and seas were so bad that a springline, the engines, and 8 men were required just to secure the ramp off the back of the boat in Amalfi!!! Quite exciting!

Ciao Melissa! Thanks for stopping by and for your nice comment. Yes, I much prefer going by boat when possible. Although che incubo can also describe being stuck on a boat with a large group of Italian school kids! 🙂

Ciao Erin! Sounds like you had a read adventure in Amalfi!! I've been through that once and it was wild.

When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it reminded me of one of my favorite Italian words: garbuglio. It means a tangle or a mess. But not just any mess, a conspicuous and intricate mess. I think we can all find a few of those around these days. Now you know what to call it in Italian!

The steps up between these two hamlets of Scala are quite steep, but it was a perfect autumn morning. Brilliant sun but a cool north breeze and the air full of the honeyed scent of sweet alyssum (which I can spot thanks to Giacomo from @cookeatsquare!) and birdsong. As a little reward to myself for the unexpected effort, I meandered a bit to enjoy the crimson vines and some sunflowers dancing in the breeze. Autumn is coming - even on the Amalfi Coast! 🍂
You have to look close for any signs of autumn in You have to look close for any signs of autumn in Amalfi. Surrounded mostly by olive, lemon, pines, and other types of evergreen trees, we don’t have much for fall foliage right in the center of town. Oh but I look! In the golden moments of the morning just as the sun hits Amalfi for the first time, I’m out there imagining autumn colors. 🍂

Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂

It was fun to see the grapes on the same vines just before harvest begins. Swipe to the right to see the same grapes back in May. Happy autumn!
