On the Scooter Around Scala

Last week I rode my motorino to Ravello for a haircut at my favorite salon on the Amalfi Coast - Total Hair Design by Gerardo. It was a beautiful morning and instead of heading directly home, I decided to enjoy the sunny weather and ride the scooter all the way around the road that circles through ...

Photo Friday: The 13th

Last week I was walking along a quiet stone pathway in Ravello, and the sun shining on this old wooden doorway caught my attention. I stopped, admired all the different beige colored textures and tones, and then continued on my way. After a few steps, I stopped again, dug through my bag and returned ...

Stopping to Enjoy the View

The thing with steep hills and lots of steps is that you just have to stop sometimes for a rest. Last Thursday, a cool and dry wind blowing down from the mountains had cleared away any trace of humidity left in the air from the rainy days before and turned the sea into an intense shade of azure ...

Photo Friday: Under the Lemon Groves in Ravello

On  any of the regular walks I take through Amalfi, Scala and Ravello, I have my favorite spots to stop and enjoy the view. Perhaps a glimps of the coastline through a garden or between two old buildings. When I see a new staircase or pathway, I'm always so curious to know where it leads and what ...

Photo Friday: Wine & Drugs

This week started for me with an allergy induced head cold and a very sore throat. I also lost my voice for the first time in  my life. I had to laugh – even though it hurt – when I saw this sign for a new shop in Ravello. Must admit that at the time it didn't sound too bad! Wishing everyone a ...

Venerdì Santo Processions in Ravello & Scala

Last week on Venerdì Santo, or Holy Friday, it is the traditional day for the Processione del Cristo Morto, a mournful procession representing the carrying of Christ after he has been taken down from the cross to his burial. Usually, a statue of Christ's body laying on a bed is carried followed by a ...

Wisteria Blooming in Ravello

After a couple of years of rainy and cold springs, the Amalfi Coast is finally having the mild and beautiful spring weather that it's famous for. The wisteria has been blooming for weeks already along the coastline, and I've been enjoying its sweet scent filling the air. While the wisteria in ...

Photo Friday: Wisteria in Ravello

Last weekend I was walking in Ravello and passed through a walkway that leads in one place between and under part of the beautiful gardens of the Villa Rufolo. I could smell the sweet scent of wisteria as I climbed a steep staircase, and as I reached the top was welcomed by this beautiful trellis of ...

Looking Up to Infinity

Recently, I've been writing about one of my favorite towns on the Amalfi Coast over at CharmingItaly.com - Ravello! While looking through my photos, this one that I took last summer while out on a boat caught my attention. You can see the beautiful little town of Atrani, and, high above, the very ...

Autumn at the Villa Cimbrone in Ravello

It's been a beautiful autumn on the Amalfi Coast. As I look out the windows at the bright blue sky and the autumn colors dotting the mountainsides in shades of reds, yellows and oranges, I'm inspired to share some photos I took in October at the Villa Cimbrone in Ravello. While the weather can be ...

Weekend ✨✨✨ in Amalfi. Weekend ✨✨✨ in Amalfi.

It’s a topic that has been on my mind a great deal lately, as it is like clockwork every six months as I go through my usual round of check ups. She spoke so gently and simply about how when she looks back on the experience now she sees all the gifts that it brought her - something that hit me on a profound level. Gifts.

I don’t know exactly why I’ve hung on to this little appointment card from Tuesday, June 15, 2021. It was for my first ultrasound where the breast cancer was found. It’s not exactly the sort of thing to be sentimental over. Looking at it today—three years later—and feeling very grateful for everything being clear and good after the latest tests, I thought of this song. This card is a little souvenir of a terrible year. But, after that recent conversation, I realized that I don’t look back at it that way anymore. Because it was also a colorful year in so many ways. Maybe I’ve hung onto it because I needed to realize that the biggest gift I can give myself is to remember the gifts. Thanks, Sally! 💙

What I love about June in Amalfi: the brilliant bo What I love about June in Amalfi: the brilliant bougainvillea against the deep blue sky, the screams of swifts swirling above the Cathedral early in the morning, the way the air is still a little cool before the sun rises over town, the rows of colorful beach umbrellas, the way the scent of our neighbor’s jasmine suddenly arrives inside our home, the return of friends who come in the summer, and warm walks along the sea after dark.

I love having a birthday in June. But since I will be back in Nebraska with family for my birthday later this month (for the first time in years! 🎉), I’m making sure I really sit and notice everything I love about this month in Amalfi. And, yes, I’m one of those people who stretches out birthday celebrations for as long as possible! 💙
