Finding Home on the Amalfi Coast

ciao-amalfi-home

When my mother first set foot in Amalfi’s main piazza and stood gazing up at the Duomo of Amalfi, something deep inside her said, “Home.” It was strong, clear and visceral. She didn’t tell me this story until many years later, long after I had moved to the Amalfi Coast.

My first experience with Amalfi, while not quite so succinct, was just as powerful. It was as a result of my mother’s immediate connection, since I tagged along on her subsequent trip to the Amalfi Coast. The emotions that flooded over me that first time I set foot in Amalfi were overwhelming. Later that day, in late February 2007, I found myself in the hotel room in Vietri sul Mare trying to make sense of it all in my journal. I wrote that when I stepped off the bus and looked up the mountainside at the colorful buildings and the watchtower above, that I had felt so intensely that this would be an important place in my life.

And now it is my home.

Have you experienced that before? That odd yet extremely familiar feeling of finding home in a place you’ve never been before? If you have, you know just what I mean.

And if my mother and I both falling for Amalfi immediately at different times wasn’t enough, there’s more to this story. When I stepped off that bus in 2007 and knew instinctively that Amalfi would be an important place, I had no clue that my tour guide that day—now my husband—was born and raised in Amalfi. How’s that for destiny?

Nearly ten years later, I still have moments when I marvel at this place I call home. Travelers come from around the world and fall in love with the Amalfi Coast. Perhaps with the pastel cascade that is Positano or with the dreamy views from Ravello. Or like me and my mother with Amalfi. There’s some reassuring about know that around the world there are countless kindred spirits who have been here—or simply dreamed of being here—and have felt that deep connection with the Amalfi Coast.

What can I say? When your heart says home, you have found your place.

Your story reads like the synopsis of a blockbuster romantic movie. Congratulations on finding your home in so many ways.

Absolutely true. I grew up on a farm in the middle of Nebraska but felt from my earliest memories that I was supposed to live in Italy. How is that for strange. I just knew as a very young girl that I had this big, wonderful Italian family who loved me and missed me too. It took me nearly 70 years and my daughters marriage to realize that I was right. Now I long for the time I can finally come HOME to Amalfi.

I would love to live in the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen as well.
My husband is Italian & left Rome with family when he was 11yrs old. They came to Australia.
He took me to Italy in 2009.
My heart skipped a beat so many times & I truly cannot get The Amalfi Coast & The Isle of Capri out of my mind.
We have 5 children & 9 grandchildren & they mean the world to us so have no option but to stay in Oz.
We joke that ‘why don’t you all come & live in Italy with us’ knowing that it won’t happen.
I actually dream of Amalfi, the Blue Grotto & the many places we saw during our 5+ weeks in heaven.
I’m an Aussie through & through but I’ve never felt like I belong here. When in Italy I felt like I’d come home. How could that be when I’d never been there before?
Lucky you for living your dream.
I won’t envy you but wish you more happiness in your paradise

I know just how you feel, Sheree! How amazing that you met your husband and have been able to spend that time in Italy. I hope you’ll be able to spend more time here soon! Once you feel that connection, it’s something to treasure wherever life leads you. Wishing you a very happy 2017!

But not just any mess, a conspicuous and intricate mess. I think we can all find a few of those around these days. Now you know what to call it in Italian!

The steps up between these two hamlets of Scala are quite steep, but it was a perfect autumn morning. Brilliant sun but a cool north breeze and the air full of the honeyed scent of sweet alyssum (which I can spot thanks to Giacomo from @cookeatsquare!) and birdsong. As a little reward to myself for the unexpected effort, I meandered a bit to enjoy the crimson vines and some sunflowers dancing in the breeze. Autumn is coming - even on the Amalfi Coast! 🍂
You have to look close for any signs of autumn in You have to look close for any signs of autumn in Amalfi. Surrounded mostly by olive, lemon, pines, and other types of evergreen trees, we don’t have much for fall foliage right in the center of town. Oh but I look! In the golden moments of the morning just as the sun hits Amalfi for the first time, I’m out there imagining autumn colors. 🍂

Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂

It was fun to see the grapes on the same vines just before harvest begins. Swipe to the right to see the same grapes back in May. Happy autumn!
