Tempting Tuesday: My favorite beach on the Amalfi Coast

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Santa Croce1

The best beach days on the Amalfi Coast have arrived, and it only seems fitting to share with you my favorite beach on the Amalfi Coast for this week’s Tempting Tuesday. Located just west of Amalfi is a small cove and spiaggia (beach) called Santa Croce. You can reach it by a short boat ride from Amalfi, or by heading down the 400 some steps that start from the Amalfi Coast road in Vettica. While we often go by boat, last Sunday I took the steps down for the first time. Going down is easy, but coming up after a long swim is a bit more work! But with stunning views around every turn of the twisting staircase, there are plenty of photo opportunities to stop and catch your breath.

The water is simply exquisite here! So clear and so clean, and swimming along the rocks you can find little grottoes with emerald water. Swimming a little more you will find the Arco Naturale, a natural arch over the sea, where locals say that those who kiss while swimming underneath are assured a lasting love. How sweet! While sitting on a beach nearby I found a heart shaped rock. Perhaps that is  good sign?

There is a small section of the beach where locals throw down their towels and enjoy the sun and beautiful waters. Santa Croce is a very rocky beach, especially after the big winter storms his year, so many people opt for the other side of the beach where you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas. There is an excellent restaurant located at Santa Croce called Da Teresa, which you can see in the photo below. You can read more about Da Teresa on Lola’s excellent blog Forchettine. (In Italian) Enjoy lunch on the nice terrace, or simply grab a couple of their great sandwiches and continue enjoying the sun and amazing view from your beach chair.

Laura’s tip: Make sure you get a carafe of white wine with peaches from Da Teresa. They even give you little bamboo skewers to pluck the large pieces of peaches out when you are done. Heaven!

And she does it again! You are my greatest sponsor, I don't know how to thank you!

I'm glad you mentioned "our" favorite, the peaches & wine, these are the significant details that remain sculpted in our memory after a great travel experience.

Ciao Laura, and again grazie for all that you do. For us bloggers and for the places of our heart.

I am sick with Envy! I am there in my head! I wouldn't mind the rocky beach at all especially if I had enough wine with peaches! Cheers!

Ciao Anne! That is the idea… to tempt you to come! 🙂 I have to say also that I was on the beach at the beginning of last November. The water was a bit chilly, but the sun was lovely! 🙂

Ciao Lola! Yes, the peaches and wine is a very significant detail for me! 🙂 Thank you so much for your kind words. I hope we can meet up this summer and enjoy a nice glass of something cool and tasty!

Ciao Lucia! Hah… good point! 🙂

Ciao Lisa! Thanks so much! I was having fun playing with all the photo features I have available now. The new program I've been using with Blogger is Windows Live Writer. (http://download.live.com/writer) I think it works with WordPress too. It is so easy to use!

Ciao Jen! I am sorry! I know what it is like to miss it here so terribly. I hope you can come back soon!

Ciao Beatriz! Welcome! So happy you found my blog. Lovely to meet another ItalyItalia contributor! What area do you write for? I look forward to heading over and checking out your blog. Thanks for introducing yourself! Ciao ciao!

Ciao Barbara! Ooh… not too much longer now! How exciting! When you get here it will be just perfect white wine with peaches weather. Yum!

Ciao Chuck! Yes, very good exercise indeed! Except I got to the top of the stairs and had a wonderful Sunday lunch. Kind of defeated the purpose of the walk! 🙂

What a moving experience yesterday morning to see What a moving experience yesterday morning to see the Olympic torch in Amalfi. 🔥 One of the many many reasons I love living right in the center of Amalfi is that in one minute I can be in the middle of making pasta with artichokes and the next watching a historic moment happen. I never take that for granted! @milanocortina2026 @olympics

Happy 250th birthday to Jane Austen! One of the de Happy 250th birthday to Jane Austen! One of the definite highlights of my year was visiting @janeaustenshouse in Chawton on a beautiful spring day. I still think of her tiny writing table and what it felt like to stand there and take it all in. I’ve enjoyed the book “A Jane Austen Year” throughout the year - pulling it off the shelf at the start of each month. While at Chawton, I picked up the embroidery kit by @abigailrosecreative made to celebrate the 250th celebration. I’ve been wanting to learn to do embroidery for years, so this was the perfect souvenir from Jane Austen’s House. Still a work in progress, but I’m nearly there! 🧵🪡
I don’t know how to begin describing Naples, which I don’t know how to begin describing Naples, which is how I felt seeing “Partenope - Musica per la sirena di Napoli” at the @teatrosancarlo yesterday. This opera in one act was written by the great Ennio Morricone 30 years ago, and it was finally performed for the first time this weekend. Just in time for the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of Naples. Mary Oliver wrote: “A town cannot live on dreams.” I was thinking about that line yesterday and wondering if maybe a town could live on mythology. 2,500 years later, Naples might just be proof that it can.

As 2025 winds down, I’ve been making my way throug As 2025 winds down, I’ve been making my way through some of the books sitting unfinished on my bedside table. I usually finish a book once started, but occasionally I come across one that is so good I can’t let myself rush through it all at once. I want to hang on to that first read as long as I can, slowly savoring the way it changes the geography of my mind.

This autumn that has been “Upstream” - a selection of essays by Mary Oliver. If “attention is the beginning of devotion,” as Oliver writes in the first essay in the book, I am deeply devoted to her writing. Few writers capture my attention and hold it the way she does. This will be a book I know will return to again and again. And, even though I’ve finished, it might be a long time before it leaves my bedside table. I’ll just leave you with a couple of Oliver’s magical lines:

“You must not ever stop being whimsical.

And you must not, ever, give anyone else the responsibility for your life.”
