The best beach days on the Amalfi Coast have arrived, and it only seems fitting to share with you my favorite beach on the Amalfi Coast for this week’s Tempting Tuesday. Located just west of Amalfi is a small cove and spiaggia (beach) called Santa Croce. You can reach it by a short boat ride from Amalfi, or by heading down the 400 some steps that start from the Amalfi Coast road in Vettica. While we often go by boat, last Sunday I took the steps down for the first time. Going down is easy, but coming up after a long swim is a bit more work! But with stunning views around every turn of the twisting staircase, there are plenty of photo opportunities to stop and catch your breath.
The water is simply exquisite here! So clear and so clean, and swimming along the rocks you can find little grottoes with emerald water. Swimming a little more you will find the Arco Naturale, a natural arch over the sea, where locals say that those who kiss while swimming underneath are assured a lasting love. How sweet! While sitting on a beach nearby I found a heart shaped rock. Perhaps that is good sign?
There is a small section of the beach where locals throw down their towels and enjoy the sun and beautiful waters. Santa Croce is a very rocky beach, especially after the big winter storms his year, so many people opt for the other side of the beach where you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas. There is an excellent restaurant located at Santa Croce called Da Teresa, which you can see in the photo below. You can read more about Da Teresa on Lola’s excellent blog Forchettine. (In Italian) Enjoy lunch on the nice terrace, or simply grab a couple of their great sandwiches and continue enjoying the sun and amazing view from your beach chair.
Laura’s tip: Make sure you get a carafe of white wine with peaches from Da Teresa. They even give you little bamboo skewers to pluck the large pieces of peaches out when you are done. Heaven!
