    Hello,
Looking for a nice hotel with beach access, love Positano but weary of only access around is by stairs. Also reading reviews something was said about sun doesn’t hit certain spouts on Positano Beaches. As for the hotel one room to accomadate Myselfs and three daughters.
    Thank you much.

Thanks for your question, Tina! You might want to consider the Hotel Aurora in Amalfi. It is located near a rocky little beach in Amalfi that is very scenic and they have a section of the beach for hotel guests. Just a few steps to reach it!

Great question! I will have to write a blog post just on this question since I could go on and on about how much I like October on the Amalfi Coast. Autumn arrives a little later here, and October is when you’ll first start seeing signs of the change of colors. The evenings can be a bit cooler, so you’ll want to pack layers, but on a sunny day the beach is gorgeous (although the water will be getting cooler, too). While September can be a continuation of hot and sticky August weather, October tends to be mild and, yes, sometimes a bit more rain. Like the spring shoulder season, October can be a bit more unpredictable (this year was a case in point – November was nicer than many days in October!), but it’s usually quite lovely!

What are some good locations that are not too expensive to buy property on the Amalfi coast?

I think that might literally be the million dollar question! At least that’s the question all the locals would like to know the answer to as well. 🙂 Property is expensive on the Amalfi Coast, but you will find that it varies a little bit depending on the location. For lower prices you’ll want to look outside of the big name towns – Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. Those are the places everyone knows and the property is higher there. But then, of course, it’s so much more convenient to live RIGHT IN Amalfi that there’s that factor to consider. But if the convenience of being right IN a town for shopping, services, socializing, etc. isn’t such a concern, then you’ll want to check the smaller towns on the coast like Scala, Minori, Maiori, Furore, etc. And then there are also the frazioni (small hamlets of larger towns), like Pogerola, Lone, Vettica – all located just around Amalfi. But the prices there might not be much lower!

As with property buying in all highly-sought after and limited areas, I think the best idea is really getting to know the area – spend time here, understand the locations and what is right for you, and get to know a property agent. Let them know you’re serious and you’ll have a better chance with properties as soon as they come on the market. I have no personal experience with property agents on the Amalfi Coast, but I have friends who have worked with the Tecnocasa office in Amalfi. That might be a good place to start. Good luck finding your home on the Amalfi Coast!

Ciao Laura!! I am dropping off at Salerno and planning to roam around Amalfi, Ravello & Atrani on 1st day – Positano, Praiano on 2nd Day. 3rd Day I will move to Capri (from positano or sorrento) and take a direct ferry to Naples from there in the evening. Now 2 questions I have in my mind. Where to stay for 2 nights in the region according to my itinerary? Is it convenient to carry luggage around in Sita bus and ferries?

Is Mr January’s place still just up the beach and around those rocks..?

La Marinella is what the chairs said when we were there 8 years ago for our honeymoon… He was such a generous and nice soul – and a good cook as well.

Some of our favorite memories are of his place and little stretch of beach.

Hi Laura, my wife and I rented an apartment in POSITANO for a week in mid April. We’re fairly active and in our mid 60’s. So a few questions, please…. Is it reasonable to hike Vesuvius or just bite the bullet and take the bus? Where’s the best place to catch a boat to Capri? Can you send a link to any hiking trails we shouldn’t miss along the coastal mountains. Anything we should not miss?

    Many thanks…

Sounds like you’re planning a wonderful holiday! If you’re interesting in hiking, April is a great time to visit the Amalfi Coast. It’s not hot like the summer. I would recommend hitting the area from mid April on, since Easter falls on April 16th this year. That’s usually the official kick off to the season on the Amalfi Coast, which means that you’ll find everything open. Just keep in mind that Easter holiday can be a very busy time! You might look in the Ravello or Scala area, since it’s up in the mountains and there are great hikes in every direction. Happy travel planning!

    Hello,

    Great website by the way!!!

I will be visiting the amalfi coast in June for 5 days, one night we are booked to stay in Capri the others we will be staying in Amalfi town.

Is it easy getting around from Amalfi in the evenings? We would like to visit Positano and other places in the evening and also a few clubs like Africana and Music on the rocks so I am just wondering how easy it would be to get taxis etc.

I also plan to propose to my girlfriend whilst we are there, my question is what is a nice restaurant with sea view that we could view the sunset? I am keen to book a table ASAP to avoid dissapointment. Any other proposal recommendations welcome, thanks in advance for your help!!!

Hi Bruce, the very first time I visited the Amalfi Coast ten years ago was at the end of February and it was gorgeous. So beautiful, in fact, that I fell in love with the place! That being said, as I write this it is storming outside. It really is a transition season now, so it’s good to be prepared for rain. It’s also best to bring layers as it can be quite warm in the sun during the day, but very cool in the evenings.

Hello Laura, love your blog and gorgeous pictures. We will be in Positano for a week in June this year. Our daughter is getting married there, having the reception at the Marincanto. We would love to travel around the amalfi by local bus and experience it all rather than go on touristy trips with a million other folks. We like kyaking, swimming, snorkeling, markets and we hope to do the the Walk of the Gods, and most of all enjoy the local food and coffee in the area. Would you know if any Suit Hire is available in the area? We like to travel light and don’t relish the thought of extra baggage. Hope to chat soon. Cheers Sandy and Andrew

We are traveling to Amalfi coast and we are staying in Maiori and travelling to the other
villages via bus or boat. I can’t wait!
We are staying at the Residence Due Torri.
We hoped to purchase some local foods at the markets and cook often at the apartment.
Thank you for the information on the village markets.
I wanted to know where there are some local cafes or trattorias or osterias that are yummy but considered”cheap eats”. For my birthday I wanted to go to a beach club. )Dinner and drinks and fun on secluded beach.) Where do you suggest? I also wanted to go on a boat to Capri but they seem sooo expensive – do you any advice please. Thank you. Lori and Daniel Canada.

Hi Lori, I would go ahead and pack bug spray for while you’re here. Especially in the summer there can be mosquitoes. Although they tend to bite more in the evenings and not during the day while hiking. But I’m of the “best to be prepared” school of travelers. No, it’s definitely not true that you don’t need to tip. This is an area where so many people make a living based on tourism – and it’s seasonal work. A tip is always very much appreciated when you enjoy the service. 🙂

While it’s been a beautiful Easter Sunday in Ama While it’s been a beautiful Easter Sunday in Amalfi, I’m still processing all of the incredible experiences from my trip to England last week. And, thanks to “Square Haunting” by @francescawade, I am still very much haunting the streets and squares of London. Her book opens with this marvelous quotation from Virginia Woolf’s diary written 100 years ago today on April 20, 1925 (photo 1). It captures just what it felt like I was doing days ago - including a saunter through Bloomsbury Square (photo 2). Diving into this book over the weekend has felt like I’ve been able to linger even longer in those rare April days of spring blooms and blue skies in London.

This book caught my eye immediately at the ever so charming @sherlockandpages in Frome (photos 4 & 5). How could it not when it was surrounded my one of my all time favorite books (“Letters to Camondo” by @edmunddewaal) and one of the best books I read last year (“All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me” by @patrickbringley)?

Hope that your Easter weekend has been a lovely one - with a little bit of “street sauntering & square haunting” wherever you may be!
Just had an unforgettable spring day visiting the Just had an unforgettable spring day visiting the Jane Austen House in Chawton as an early birthday present for myself.(Quite a bit early as it’s not until June.) But earlier this year I decided to have a Jane Austen theme for the year, especially since 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth in 1775. I do love a theme! Seeing the place where she wrote all of her novels, her tiny twelve-sided writing table, a quilt she made, and sitting in the garden listening to the birds sing is altogether something I’ll never forget. ✍️
Watching the colors of the sea and the fish swimmi Watching the colors of the sea and the fish swimming and thinking of the deep connections of old friends. And this poem by Mary Oliver. Hold tight to the friends who always find a way to say “Look!” and laugh in astonishment.

Mysteries, Yes
— by Mary Oliver

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the
mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will
never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the
scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.

Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.

Let me keep company always with those who say
“Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.
Mary Oliver wrote in a poem that “happiness isn’t a town on a map.” But when the little bit of wisteria blooms in Amalfi, I’m not so sure. 💜
