Does it Snow on the Amalfi Coast?

Have You Ever Wondered if it Snows on the Amalfi Coast? When you imagine the Amalfi Coast, what does it look like? Do you see rugged beaches bathed in warm summer sunshine, colorful beach umbrellas fluttering in the breeze and the sparkling sea? Or perhaps a bougainvillea draped terrace or trees ...

Visiting the Amalfi Coast in the Winter – 5 Things You Need to Know

When most people think of the Amalfi Coast, the scenes that come to mind are beaches strewn with colorful umbrellas, bougainvilla draped pergolas and pastel hued buildings in the bright sunshine. If you've visited the Amalfi Coast from say April through October, that is very likely what you ...

Winter Weather Layers

The first week of this new year has come and gone seemingly in a haze. Mostly because it has been rainy and grey with low lying clouds that actually do make it hazy. At least outside my house! As I write, big clouds are blowing by thanks to strong winds from the sea. Classic winter weather on the ...

Christmas Scenes in Amalfi

With sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures, this has been one of the most beautiful Christmas seasons I've experienced so far on the Amalfi Coast. Although it has been a busy time of year, much like this entire year has been, I've been enjoying glimpses of the holiday season in Amalfi. I ...

Home Again

Last week I landed back in Italy after nearly a month spent traveling in America for work and to visit my family in Nebraska. (Helloooo early Thanksgiving gatherings!) It was a whirlwind trip with stops in New Orleans and New York City before heading to Nebraska. I found there's still a wee bit of ...

Winter Rest on the Amalfi Coast

I don't get the winter blues as the change of seasons just feels right to me. I enjoy watching the way the light shifts and the color palette of nature takes on more muted hues. Gone are the bright bursts of orange beach umbrellas against the expansive blue sky, the brilliant glow of hot pink ...

Snow on the Amalfi Coast!

We woke up to the most beautiful surprise this morning. Snow on the Amalfi Coast! What an incredible way to remember the last day of 2014. While we occasionally get snow up in the mountains during the winter, I could tell this was a special snow. I could see snow on the beach in Atrani and snow by ...

Winter Sunshine

There's nothing quite like when the sun comes out in February after a rainy spell. There's the warmth of the sunshine to dry everything out, but also that sense of spring on its way. It's hopeful, warm and irresistible. And not just for the Amalfitani! We took an afternoon stroll in Amalfi this ...

Christmas Eve Fireworks in Amalfi

If you've spent time exploring the little side streets and alleys in Amalfi, you'll have quickly learned that there are a lot of stairs to get pretty much anywhere. A lot. Late on Christmas Eve we worked off the big dinner by climbing about 200 steps to meet some good friends for a drink while ...

This is Winter in Amalfi

Like any good story, a place has multiple sides, fascinating characters that draw you in, unexpected twists, and moments that make you fall in love. You can't know a story from only reading a few pages, just like you can't know a place until you've been there turning the pages day by day – being ...

The First Snow on the Amalfi Coast

Yesterday morning we woke up to find a dusting of snow on the tops of the Lattari Mountains high above the Amalfi Coast. It was a beautiful sight in the morning sunshine. It doesn't snow often down at lower altitudes, but I do love the wintery setting of seeing it on the mountaintops. The snow ...

What a moving experience yesterday morning to see What a moving experience yesterday morning to see the Olympic torch in Amalfi. 🔥 One of the many many reasons I love living right in the center of Amalfi is that in one minute I can be in the middle of making pasta with artichokes and the next watching a historic moment happen. I never take that for granted! @milanocortina2026 @olympics

Lovely new Christmas ornament created by @illustra Lovely new Christmas ornament created by @illustrationbyjonathan of Jane Austen’s House in Chawton and her tiny 12-sided writing table. It looks exactly like the beautiful spring day when I was there in April this year. Such a beautiful memory! I think this will have to stay out all year.
Happy 250th birthday to Jane Austen! One of the de Happy 250th birthday to Jane Austen! One of the definite highlights of my year was visiting @janeaustenshouse in Chawton on a beautiful spring day. I still think of her tiny writing table and what it felt like to stand there and take it all in. I’ve enjoyed the book “A Jane Austen Year” throughout the year - pulling it off the shelf at the start of each month. While at Chawton, I picked up the embroidery kit by @abigailrosecreative made to celebrate the 250th celebration. I’ve been wanting to learn to do embroidery for years, so this was the perfect souvenir from Jane Austen’s House. Still a work in progress, but I’m nearly there! 🧵🪡
I don’t know how to begin describing Naples, which I don’t know how to begin describing Naples, which is how I felt seeing “Partenope - Musica per la sirena di Napoli” at the @teatrosancarlo yesterday. This opera in one act was written by the great Ennio Morricone 30 years ago, and it was finally performed for the first time this weekend. Just in time for the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of Naples. Mary Oliver wrote: “A town cannot live on dreams.” I was thinking about that line yesterday and wondering if maybe a town could live on mythology. 2,500 years later, Naples might just be proof that it can.

As 2025 winds down, I’ve been making my way throug As 2025 winds down, I’ve been making my way through some of the books sitting unfinished on my bedside table. I usually finish a book once started, but occasionally I come across one that is so good I can’t let myself rush through it all at once. I want to hang on to that first read as long as I can, slowly savoring the way it changes the geography of my mind.

This autumn that has been “Upstream” - a selection of essays by Mary Oliver. If “attention is the beginning of devotion,” as Oliver writes in the first essay in the book, I am deeply devoted to her writing. Few writers capture my attention and hold it the way she does. This will be a book I know will return to again and again. And, even though I’ve finished, it might be a long time before it leaves my bedside table. I’ll just leave you with a couple of Oliver’s magical lines:

“You must not ever stop being whimsical.

And you must not, ever, give anyone else the responsibility for your life.”
