Amalfi Coast Travel May-2

Buon Primo Maggio!

As I sit down to write this morning, rain is pouring down on the Amalfi Coast and low clouds have turned my view into nothing but white. Spring arrived early this year, but the last couple of weeks have been a most unwelcome return to winter. Yet the rains will clear and when the sun shines ...

Winter Weather Layers

The first week of this new year has come and gone seemingly in a haze. Mostly because it has been rainy and grey with low lying clouds that actually do make it hazy. At least outside my house! As I write, big clouds are blowing by thanks to strong winds from the sea. Classic winter weather on the ...

Beautiful Spring Blossoms on the Amalfi Coast

My heart soars when the trees burst into bloom and the air is full of the sweet scent of wisteria on the Amalfi Coast. Spring has officially arrived and brought with it all the excitement of a new season. Tiny leaves are the brightest shades of green and the valleys glow with a vibrant new tint. You ...

Dramatic Clouds Rolling in Over Ravello

April has been a bit of tease so far this year leaving many locals wondering just what happened to spring. It Italy there's an old saying "marzo è pazzo," that March is crazy, and I've overheard quite a few people saying that it's not just March. For every hazy, grey day another brilliant spring day ...

Winter Rest on the Amalfi Coast

I don't get the winter blues as the change of seasons just feels right to me. I enjoy watching the way the light shifts and the color palette of nature takes on more muted hues. Gone are the bright bursts of orange beach umbrellas against the expansive blue sky, the brilliant glow of hot pink ...

Autumn Reflections

It has been hard to know what to write. Tomorrow will be three weeks that my husband has been sick, and every day I hope he will be feeling better. We're thankful that it's nothing extremely serious and we're anticipating a full recovery. It has just been very tough and very slow. On the days when I ...

Oh, it's good to be back home on the Amalfi Coast. Since moving here many years ago, I've never traveled back to America in the summer. After enjoying warm weather, sunshine, fresh picked sweet corn and BLTs in Nebraska, I realize what I've been missing. But then I come home and see colors like this ...

Pink Flowers on the Bell Tower

In early summer the Amalfi Coast blushes a bright pink. When the days become warm and spring showers have turned everything a lush green, the valerian flowers burst out, quite literally, from every nook and cranny. They poke out of crumbly stone walls, drape over the walkways through villages and ...

Following a twisty, narrow road down from the center of Ravello, you'll find the striking Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer. I enjoy its gleaming white curves and especially the piazzale with a sweeping view of the Amalfi Coast. It's the perfect spot to display large sculptural artwork, and I'm pleased to ...

When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it reminded me of one of my favorite Italian words: garbuglio. It means a tangle or a mess. But not just any mess, a conspicuous and intricate mess. I think we can all find a few of those around these days. Now you know what to call it in Italian!
Completely unplanned, I ended up getting off the b Completely unplanned, I ended up getting off the bus in Pontone this morning instead of Minuta. The steps up between these two hamlets of Scala are quite steep, but it was a perfect autumn morning. Brilliant sun but a cool north breeze and the air full of the honeyed scent of sweet alyssum (which I can spot thanks to Giacomo from @cookeatsquare!) and birdsong. As a little reward to myself for the unexpected effort, I meandered a bit to enjoy the crimson vines and some sunflowers dancing in the breeze. Autumn is coming - even on the Amalfi Coast! 🍂
You have to look close for any signs of autumn in You have to look close for any signs of autumn in Amalfi. Surrounded mostly by olive, lemon, pines, and other types of evergreen trees, we don’t have much for fall foliage right in the center of town. Oh but I look! In the golden moments of the morning just as the sun hits Amalfi for the first time, I’m out there imagining autumn colors. 🍂
This month’s newsletter continues the travels in This month’s newsletter continues the travels in Italy with American poet H.W. Longfellow in 1828 as he made his way down to Naples. Plus a look at Grand Tour volcano tourism and a bonus of 19th-century tips for now not to be a tourist. Link in bio!
Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂
