Photo Friday: Running Back to Paris

I can't believe it's already time for another Photo Friday. Two weeks ago today I was out exploring the 1st arrondissement in Paris, from the l'Orangerie Museum in the morning, along the rue de Rivoli to the Palais Royal, shopping on Place des Victoires, the late Gothic magic of St-Eustache, vin ...

Photo Friday: Paris Métro

This morning I'm waking up in a different place, one that is both familar and foreign all at once. Parigi! (That's how you say Paris in Italian.) Last January I visited Paris for the first time with my boyfriend, and we loved it so much that we were thrilled when I had the opportunity to visit for ...

Photo Friday: Winter Reflections

When the sun shines, this is just about one of my favorite times of the year on the Amalfi Coast. Walking along the port in Amalfi, the air is cool and clear and the late afternoon light is magical. It's the time of year to take a deep breath and get lost in the colors and light dancing across the ...

Photo Friday: Architectural Layers

The architecture of the Amalfi Coast is endlessly fascinating to me, and the Duomo of Salerno is one of my favorite spots in Campania. I took this photo in the beautiful atrium looking up to the 12th-century bell tower. To learn more and see more photos (including one of the crypt you won't want to ...

Photo Friday: A Serengeti Sunrise on the Amalfi Coast

With a boyfriend who works as an official tour guide for the region of Campania, our days often start early. Especially when his groups depart from Sorrento or Salerno over an hour away. The bright side is that I get the chance to watch the day begin, as the sun climbs up over the mountains across ...

Photo Friday: The Fearful Fountain

Usually, the photos I pick out each week for Photo Friday jump out to me. Often they're nice memories from an event or something that I've done over the past weeks or months. Other times I scan through my photos and nothing seems quite right. This one, however, is perfect for this week. It's been ...

Photo Friday: Watching Over Amalfi

I don't think I'll ever tire of taking photographs of Amalfi's Duomo of Sant' Andrea. There's something so intriguing to me about the design and its situation at the top of the grand staircase watching over all the activity in the town's main piazza. While walking down the 62 steps a few weeks ago, ...

Photo Friday: Autumn in Anacapri

Despite all the recent rain and windstorms, it's been a beautiful autumn this year on the Amalfi Coast. On a nice day at the end of October, I went to Capri on one of the last days the boats were running from Amalfi to Capri. (Just a couple of days before the rough seas!)  The autumn colors were ...

Photo Friday: Autumn on the Amalfi Coast

Autumn has started to arrive on the Amalfi Coast, and everywhere you turn there are pretty signs like this vine climbing up a wall. I snapped this photo while out taking a walk last week in Scala. I loved the contrast between the strong reds, the blue sky and the mountain peaks in the distance. A ...

Tempting Tuesday: Falling in Love with Florence

This week Cecil Lee, travel photographer extraordinaire, is back to tell us about Florence, another spot in Italy he fell in love with during his travels earlier this year. And since I just visited there for the first time this past spring, I know what it's like to fall in love with the beauty of ...

Photo Friday: Sailing into Autumn

Even though the weather has turned rainy and cool, especially up in the mountains of the Amalfi Coast, there's still a touch of summer in the air in Amalfi. One morning this week I was out for a walk in the warm sun and I snapped this photo of a sailboat. For a moment it felt just like summer! Even ...

A spectacular view of a truly spectacular place as A spectacular view of a truly spectacular place as I flew out of Naples yesterday morning. A little bit delayed due to Winter Storm Olive in the midwest, but I was greeted in central Nebraska by blue skies and flocks of Sandhill cranes and snow geese. “Oh, to love what is lovely” as Mary Oliver wrote about that joyful experience of seeing snow geese golden in a sunny sky. ✨

Non Amalfi Coast question. Do you wake up in the m Non Amalfi Coast question. Do you wake up in the morning with music or a song in your head? I do nearly every morning and it’s curious to me what shows up. Usually it’s something I’ve been listening to, but sometimes it’s really random, like someone’s left the music room door slightly ajar in the brain. This morning it was a jaunty version of “Loch Lomond” from the 1940s sung by Maxine Sullivan. (You’d think that would be from the random category but I actually listened to it yesterday.) So that’s what was swinging about in my head as I took a walk early this morning. 🎶

Musing On The Roaring Ocean
by Robert Burns

Musing on the roaring ocean,
Which divides my love and me;
Wearying heav’n in warm devotion,
For his weal where’er he be.

Hope and Fear’s alternate billow
Yielding late to Nature’s law,
Whispering spirits round my pillow,
Talk of him that’s far awa.

Ye whom sorrow never wounded,
Ye who never shed a tear,
Care-untroubled, joy-surrounded,
Gaudy day to you is dear.

Gentle night, do thou befriend me,
Downy sleep, the curtain draw;
Spirits kind, again attend me,
Talk of him that’s far awa!
