A Walk-in Visitor

The other day the wind was howling and the rain was coming down hard. I opened the window to close the outside shutters and this fellow walked right in. I don’t remember seeing an insetto stecco, or what we call a walking stick bug in English, since I was a little kid. He must ...

Tempting Tuesday: Church of Santo Stefano, Capri

Just off Capri’s famous Piazzetta, or little piazza, which is one of the island’s top places to pay far too much to see and be seen, you’ll find the beautiful 17th century church of Santo Stefano. The steps leading up the church are often lined with beautiful flowers forming an ...

Enjoying the beach to yourself at Positano

Last weekend on the way to Capri, the boat stopped first in Positano. It was a beautiful and bright morning, especially warm  in the sun for the last day of October. As the few late season tourists got off and on the boat, I couldn’t help but notice the empty beach that ...

Weekend ✨✨✨ in Amalfi. Weekend ✨✨✨ in Amalfi.

It’s a topic that has been on my mind a great deal lately, as it is like clockwork every six months as I go through my usual round of check ups. She spoke so gently and simply about how when she looks back on the experience now she sees all the gifts that it brought her - something that hit me on a profound level. Gifts.

I don’t know exactly why I’ve hung on to this little appointment card from Tuesday, June 15, 2021. It was for my first ultrasound where the breast cancer was found. It’s not exactly the sort of thing to be sentimental over. Looking at it today—three years later—and feeling very grateful for everything being clear and good after the latest tests, I thought of this song. This card is a little souvenir of a terrible year. But, after that recent conversation, I realized that I don’t look back at it that way anymore. Because it was also a colorful year in so many ways. Maybe I’ve hung onto it because I needed to realize that the biggest gift I can give myself is to remember the gifts. Thanks, Sally! 💙

What I love about June in Amalfi: the brilliant bo What I love about June in Amalfi: the brilliant bougainvillea against the deep blue sky, the screams of swifts swirling above the Cathedral early in the morning, the way the air is still a little cool before the sun rises over town, the rows of colorful beach umbrellas, the way the scent of our neighbor’s jasmine suddenly arrives inside our home, the return of friends who come in the summer, and warm walks along the sea after dark.

I love having a birthday in June. But since I will be back in Nebraska with family for my birthday later this month (for the first time in years! 🎉), I’m making sure I really sit and notice everything I love about this month in Amalfi. And, yes, I’m one of those people who stretches out birthday celebrations for as long as possible! 💙
