Foto Friday: The Duomo in My Dreams

I woke up this morning just after sunrise but before the alarm beeped the beginning of a new day. I'm a morning person, even on the mornings when my body feels like starting a little bit slower. Even before I had moved, my brain was fighting its way through the fog of sleep and when I woke up it was ...

Recipe | End of Winter Zucca

It's hard not to look forward to spring on April days when the sky is brilliant blue and the first blossoms are popping out on the trees. But the other evening as the wind howled down from the mountains and I stood in the kitchen chopping zucca, or pumpkin, I had that cozy feeling of being at home ...

Foto Friday: Vespas in London

While the coffee shop scene in London is drastically different than the Amalfi Coast, there is one familiar sight that I spotted outside a shop. All of the Vespas! Aren't these three lined up so cute? ...

Finding Italy in London

I'm in London this week enjoying a very a very different landscape than what I'm used to seeing each day. From stone steps and trains of donkeys hauling supplies I've come to the urban setting of one of my favorite cities in the world - London. It makes a nice change of pace, and always surprises me ...

Foto Friday: Up the Ancient Staircases in Amalfi

Just like all the top travel destinations in Italy and around the world, there are certainly times during the year when Amalfi can be quite a popular spot. But I feel sorry for the people who say things like, "Venice is too touristy" or "Amalfi is too crowded." Those people miss out on so much. I ...

Bends, Curves and Checks in Ravello

There is a staircase I follow often to visit family that leads from the main piazza of Ravello, through and under the Villa Rufulo and past two churches. The first church is the much photographed Chiesa della SS. Annunziata. But my favorite view of it is the one you see above, which is so nicely ...

Foto Friday: The Lemon Trees

How I wish this delivery of lemon trees was for me! The other day I spotted this cluster of trees waiting to be carried down the steps carefully to their new home on a terrace overlooking the Amalfi Coast and sparkling blue sea. Lucky little lemon trees! Some day I hope to have my own little garden ...

A View to Vesuvius

From the Amalfi Coast there are a few ways to reach Naples, but from Amalfi the quickest and easiest is via the Valico di Chiunzi, a pass across the Lattari mountains connecting the Amalfi Coast to Naples and the surrounding area. From Ravello, the road climbs higher and deeper into the mountains ...

Foto Friday: Gone Fishin’

No, not me! I'm not cut out for fishing. Sitting by the sea lost in a book, yes. Fishing, not so much. But I like to watch other people fish. It's fascinating to me to see the focus, the patience and the connection with the sea. I spotted this gentleman in Amalfi wearing a vibrant red sweater and ...

Return to the Sea

The people of Amalfi have always had a strong connection to the sea. Not just because of the town's geographic setting, but because of something that seems to run deep in the blood. This is the something that led those Amalfitani in the Middle Ages to head out across the sea to other parts of the ...

This month’s newsletter continues the travels in This month’s newsletter continues the travels in Italy with American poet H.W. Longfellow in 1828 as he made his way down to Naples. Plus a look at Grand Tour volcano tourism and a bonus of 19th-century tips for now not to be a tourist. Link in bio!
Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂

It was fun to see the grapes on the same vines just before harvest begins. Swipe to the right to see the same grapes back in May. Happy autumn!

This morning was a little cloudy when I went out f This morning was a little cloudy when I went out for my morning walk like I do most mornings in Amalfi. Down the coast, across the Gulf of Salerno, rays of light were shining right on the city of Salerno. I had set out with Salerno on my mind because it was there that 82 years ago today—on September 9, 1943—the Landing of Salerno began during WWII. My Grandpa was in the Army during the war - a lot of it in Italy. Yet he would never speak of where he was or what he did, and certainly had no desire to ever see Italy again after the war. While he probably wasn’t in that first landing in Salerno, he would have been somewhere in Italy, perhaps further south in Calabria or in Sicily. I always think of him during these days and wonder about those hard experiences he must have had in Italy. And very grateful for what he and so many fought for and endured.

If you ever visit Salerno, south of the city there’s an Allied War Cemetery that is a moving and important place to visit. 🤍
Have I ever shared one of my favorite poems about Have I ever shared one of my favorite poems about Amalfi? It’s by the American poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933). It’s simple and it’s heartbreaking - like first loves so often are. But I think about it often, especially on night walks in Amalfi.

Night Song At Amalfi

I asked the heaven of stars
What I should give my love —
It answered me with silence,
Silence above.

I asked the darkened sea
Down where the fishers go —
It answered me with silence,
Silence below.

Oh, I could give him weeping,
Or I could give him song —
But how can I give silence,
My whole life long?
