Photo Friday: A Passing Glimpse of Amalfi

Ciao Amalfi View from Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi

Sometimes I think a partial view can be even more alluring than a total or unobstructed view. It taps into that feeling of excitement that comes from peeking through a keyhole or a garden gate into another world—perhaps forbidden—just beyond.

That’s how I felt recently when I caught this passing glimpse of Amalfi while walking among the beautiful terraces at the Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi. Located high above Amalfi in the former Convento di San Pietro della Canonica, a monastery founded in 1212, this hotel just reopened to the  public in 2009. I’ve been curious to get a look at the restoration and remodeling firsthand, and a few weeks ago that happened. I toured the hotel quickly, and then did the appropriate amount of gawking over the views of Amalfi from the terraced gardens. The whole environment, indoors and out, is decorated in a modern and restrained style very much in keeping with the origins of the building.

And the views? Let’s just say this is only a glimpse of how glorious they are!

Happy Friday!

Grazie, Lisa! It's so expensive there … but it has the views and the beauty to bring it in for sure. Maybe someday we'll make it to the spa! 🙂

After taking a cruise through Greece I thought the views in Santorini would be the best of the trip, but the death-defying bus ride down the Amalfi Coast was by far my favorite! I live in Colorado so I’m used to mountain roads, but those cliffside curves were amazing. Too bad my camera ran out of memory. Guess I’ll just have to go back!

Ciao Erin! Wow, that’s saying something after some of the mountain roads I’ve been on in Colorado. 🙂 I’m so glad you had a good time on your trip … and you’ll definitely have to come back next time with lots of memory cards! 🙂

I plan on taking my friends to the beach by Amalfi when we are there for lunch.Maybe that would be a good place to meet you and let us treat you to lunch..Two of my dearest friends are coming with me. It will be the first time in Italy for both. I know they will love the Amalfi Coast as much as I do.I hope that you still have my e mail mimi052347..Sher

But not just any mess, a conspicuous and intricate mess. I think we can all find a few of those around these days. Now you know what to call it in Italian!
Completely unplanned, I ended up getting off the b Completely unplanned, I ended up getting off the bus in Pontone this morning instead of Minuta. The steps up between these two hamlets of Scala are quite steep, but it was a perfect autumn morning. Brilliant sun but a cool north breeze and the air full of the honeyed scent of sweet alyssum (which I can spot thanks to Giacomo from @cookeatsquare!) and birdsong. As a little reward to myself for the unexpected effort, I meandered a bit to enjoy the crimson vines and some sunflowers dancing in the breeze. Autumn is coming - even on the Amalfi Coast! 🍂
You have to look close for any signs of autumn in You have to look close for any signs of autumn in Amalfi. Surrounded mostly by olive, lemon, pines, and other types of evergreen trees, we don’t have much for fall foliage right in the center of town. Oh but I look! In the golden moments of the morning just as the sun hits Amalfi for the first time, I’m out there imagining autumn colors. 🍂

Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂
