The Magic of Sunrise

Early this morning, we made our way around the familiar curves on the way home from the Naples airport. The only hard part of having family visit is that eventually the time comes when we have to haul the suitcases back up the stairs—invariably at an unreasonable hour of the morning—and make the trip over the Chiunzi pass to the airport. Rounding a gentle curve not far from Tramonti on the way home we were greeted with a golden glow across the mountains. I stopped short in the middle of a sentence, completely forgetting what I was saying. The car was silent for a few minutes as we took in the warm light of the sunrise above Ravello.

After a few more curves, I couldn’t stand it anymore. “Stop the car, please. I have to take some photos.” In the distance the Cilento coastline stretched all the way to the Punta Licosa, and the sunshine shone brightly like a flashlight beam across the Bay of Salerno.

Down below Ravello, the first rays of light were arriving in Minori. Around town people were waking up and heading to work or school, and I wondered how many were aware of the beautiful sunrise starting the day.

Magical Sunrise on the Amalfi Coast

There must have been a bit of magic in the sunrise this morning. It soothed that heaviness in me that comes from saying goodbye, and helped bring a smile to my face. Like sunrises and sunsets, life is about hellos and goodbyes. They color our lives and fill them with warmth and happiness. I was filled with gratitude for the early morning drive that made us happen across this beautiful sunrise, just as I’m grateful for every moment I have with my family and friends.

    Laura,

Thanks for the beautiful pictures, and by all means congratulations! Your family and friends were very happy I suspect to see you happy and living in such an amazing place. So often we see friends and family for less than happy reasons, this must have been a trip they will always remember fondly.

Thank you so much, Mike! Good time with family and friends is certainly something that I value more now that I live so far away. I treasure the time together in Italy and when I visit America!

It’s a topic that has been on my mind a great deal lately, as it is like clockwork every six months as I go through my usual round of check ups. She spoke so gently and simply about how when she looks back on the experience now she sees all the gifts that it brought her - something that hit me on a profound level. Gifts.

I don’t know exactly why I’ve hung on to this little appointment card from Tuesday, June 15, 2021. It was for my first ultrasound where the breast cancer was found. It’s not exactly the sort of thing to be sentimental over. Looking at it today—three years later—and feeling very grateful for everything being clear and good after the latest tests, I thought of this song. This card is a little souvenir of a terrible year. But, after that recent conversation, I realized that I don’t look back at it that way anymore. Because it was also a colorful year in so many ways. Maybe I’ve hung onto it because I needed to realize that the biggest gift I can give myself is to remember the gifts. Thanks, Sally! 💙

I love having a birthday in June. But since I will be back in Nebraska with family for my birthday later this month (for the first time in years! 🎉), I’m making sure I really sit and notice everything I love about this month in Amalfi. And, yes, I’m one of those people who stretches out birthday celebrations for as long as possible! 💙
