Spring Blossoms on the Amalfi Coast

This week has been the classic mix of the rain showers and glorious sunshine that herald the arrival of Spring. This is the time of year I don’t mind not having a car or scooter as walking becomes even more pleasurable an experience than usual here. Over the past few weeks I’ve made one of my favorite walks many times, each trip noting the blossoms and tiny leaves growing larger and brighter. While the sun was shining the other day, I took my camera along and photographed the blossoms along the way to share some of the beauty of spring on the Amalfi Coast here on Ciao Amalfi. Happy Spring!!

These wisteria photos are just a mere temptation of the beautiful blossoms bursting forth all over the Amalfi Coast. The wisteria is in bloom, and this is one my favorite events of the year here. Head over to Bell’Avventura where you can see just how gorgeous it is in Scintilla’s recent post Desperate Housewives on Wisteria Lane – Eat your heart out!

It is paradise!

Thanks for sharing a beautiful Amalfi spring day. The wisteria in Positano and Amalfi certainly looks spectacular this year. I am really looking forward to it being in full bloom here, but we need a few more sunny and warm days yet, although the colour has started to peek through.

After my first trip to Italy I knew I had to find a wisteria that would be hardy enough to survive Minnesota winters. Took a little research, but I am now the proud owner of a five year old wisteria vine that blooms during the summer and always sends me back to Italy with it's heavenly scent.

I will Laura if I can get any shots that I feel are good enough! The Amalfi coast is a hard act to follow. I had a look this morning and there is more colour emerging slowly.

Springtime blossoms just add to Italy's attraction.

The Amalfi coast must be even more stunning at this time of year.

Ciao Barb! Wow, I'm so happy to hear that you found a variety of wisteria that can survive the cold winters in Minnesota. How wonderful! I'm still trying to find a good place in our garden where it will be happy and have room to grow. Thinking….

Ciao LindyLouMac! Would love to see them! The sweet scent should be coming out soon. I can sometimes smell it here before I know where it's coming from. So lovely!

Ciao Linda! I think this is my favorite time of the year here on the Amalfi Coast. May is certainly one of the most beautiful months, and April is leading right up to it! 🙂

Ciao Alison! Yes, and with it the spring showers, too. Hope the sun is around the corner again!

Ciao Alex! The blossoms and colors really do add to the beauty here. I wish I could capture the scent of the air to share here. I was amazed last year to learn that the air here really is scented with jasmine, orange blossoms and wisteria. 🙂

My wife’s 50th is coming up and a island get away was the present I had in mind. We went to Rome and Florence last year and were positivley in love with Italy and the people. While thinking it through I reserched the Amalfi coast and now we’re booked for April 2011. I discovered your blog and want to thank you for the tips and inspiration! The Chistmas decorations look wonderful!

Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂

This morning was a little cloudy when I went out f This morning was a little cloudy when I went out for my morning walk like I do most mornings in Amalfi. Down the coast, across the Gulf of Salerno, rays of light were shining right on the city of Salerno. I had set out with Salerno on my mind because it was there that 82 years ago today—on September 9, 1943—the Landing of Salerno began during WWII. My Grandpa was in the Army during the war - a lot of it in Italy. Yet he would never speak of where he was or what he did, and certainly had no desire to ever see Italy again after the war. While he probably wasn’t in that first landing in Salerno, he would have been somewhere in Italy, perhaps further south in Calabria or in Sicily. I always think of him during these days and wonder about those hard experiences he must have had in Italy. And very grateful for what he and so many fought for and endured.

If you ever visit Salerno, south of the city there’s an Allied War Cemetery that is a moving and important place to visit. 🤍
Have I ever shared one of my favorite poems about Have I ever shared one of my favorite poems about Amalfi? It’s by the American poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933). It’s simple and it’s heartbreaking - like first loves so often are. But I think about it often, especially on night walks in Amalfi.

Night Song At Amalfi

I asked the heaven of stars
What I should give my love —
It answered me with silence,
Silence above.

I asked the darkened sea
Down where the fishers go —
It answered me with silence,
Silence below.

Oh, I could give him weeping,
Or I could give him song —
But how can I give silence,
My whole life long?
