Does it Snow on the Amalfi Coast?

Have You Ever Wondered if it Snows on the Amalfi Coast? When you imagine the Amalfi Coast, what does it look like? Do you see rugged beaches bathed in warm summer sunshine, colorful beach umbrellas fluttering in the breeze and the sparkling sea? Or perhaps a bougainvillea draped terrace or trees ...

Atrani Transformed into a Christmas Presepe

Christmas is a magical time on the Amalfi Coast. With its colorful lights and picturesque setting, Atrani is one of the most charming spots this time of year. It feels like you're walking right through a traditional prespe, or nativity scene. This holiday season Atrani has created a unique and ...

Visiting the Amalfi Coast in the Winter – 5 Things You Need to Know

When most people think of the Amalfi Coast, the scenes that come to mind are beaches strewn with colorful umbrellas, bougainvilla draped pergolas and pastel hued buildings in the bright sunshine. If you've visited the Amalfi Coast from say April through October, that is very likely what you ...

Moments of Sea Glass

A quiet afternoon not long ago I found myself walking along the waterfront in Amalfi with my husband. Sometimes hand in hand and other times meandering along, bumping into one another as you do when walking on uneven cobblestones. Somehow that has become just as romantic as walking hand in hand, ...

Ice Skating in Amalfi

There is a fun addition to the festive atmosphere in Amalfi this year with the arrival of an ice skating rink. Yes an ice skating rink in Amalfi! The kids in town have been enjoying trying it out on these warm December days. There are even cute little bears they can push around to get used to the ...

Home Again

Last week I landed back in Italy after nearly a month spent traveling in America for work and to visit my family in Nebraska. (Helloooo early Thanksgiving gatherings!) It was a whirlwind trip with stops in New Orleans and New York City before heading to Nebraska. I found there's still a wee bit of ...

Amalfi Winter Blues (and Reds)

Even though the first signs have begun to arrive that tell us that spring is around the corner, a cold north wind blowing down the mountains the last few days has made it feel very much like winter isn't ready to let go quite yet. I'm ready for warmth and sunshine and spending more time outdoors. ...

My Blue Heaven

Last week the most remarkably normal thing happened. I went for a walk in Amalfi with my husband. Normal because we've done that together countless times over the past eight years. Remarkable because it was the first time we've done that since last autumn when he got sick. While his recovery process ...

Winter Rest on the Amalfi Coast

I don't get the winter blues as the change of seasons just feels right to me. I enjoy watching the way the light shifts and the color palette of nature takes on more muted hues. Gone are the bright bursts of orange beach umbrellas against the expansive blue sky, the brilliant glow of hot pink ...

The Golden Hour

Amalfi glows in the evening light. This is true all year long, but it's especially so during the golden hour just before sunset in the winter. Looking east, the cascade of buildings above the Hotel Luna watchtower take on a gorgeous hue. If I could paint, I would sit up here in the evenings and ...

November Snow on the Amalfi Coast

Yesterday morning we awoke to a wintry surprise ... snow! A cold front blew down from the mountains overnight and left a light dusting of snow at the highest elevations along the Amalfi Coast. Even at the top of Scala the cars were covered with a slushy white covering we don't see all that often ...

Sugar Snow on the Amalfi Coast

It's March already, and that means it's time to start looking for those sunny and warm early spring days to start coming. I hear my daffodils are blooming quite happily this year, which means they survived the move across the garden last year just fine. I hope there will still be a few bright yellow ...

When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it reminded me of one of my favorite Italian words: garbuglio. It means a tangle or a mess. But not just any mess, a conspicuous and intricate mess. I think we can all find a few of those around these days. Now you know what to call it in Italian!
Completely unplanned, I ended up getting off the b Completely unplanned, I ended up getting off the bus in Pontone this morning instead of Minuta. The steps up between these two hamlets of Scala are quite steep, but it was a perfect autumn morning. Brilliant sun but a cool north breeze and the air full of the honeyed scent of sweet alyssum (which I can spot thanks to Giacomo from @cookeatsquare!) and birdsong. As a little reward to myself for the unexpected effort, I meandered a bit to enjoy the crimson vines and some sunflowers dancing in the breeze. Autumn is coming - even on the Amalfi Coast! 🍂
You have to look close for any signs of autumn in You have to look close for any signs of autumn in Amalfi. Surrounded mostly by olive, lemon, pines, and other types of evergreen trees, we don’t have much for fall foliage right in the center of town. Oh but I look! In the golden moments of the morning just as the sun hits Amalfi for the first time, I’m out there imagining autumn colors. 🍂

Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂
