Photo Friday: Big Clouds

Even from high in Ravello, it's easy to spot that the beaches in Maiori and Minori are busy this time of the summer. I stopped the other day for a moment to watch the big clouds looming over the mountains, and I hoped they would get stuck there so as not to ruin the sunny afternoon for all the ...

Enjoying the sunshine in Amalfi

My trips to the beach have been few and far between so far this summer. When I do find time to go, however, I enjoy every moment! Last week on the beach in Amalfi I was able to get some sun at last on a very pretty afternoon. The bright colors of the beach umbrellas were striking against the blue ...

Photo Friday: Salve

I pass this whitewashed entrance to a house on my usual walk, and every time the work "Salve" painted above the doorway catches my eye. This common expression of greeting in Italian simply means "hello," but I always wonder about it as I pass by. I've never seen anyone coming or going, there are ...

Photo Friday: The View from the Top

I haven't been to Capri yet this year, but I'm itching to go! The island is stunning in so many ways, and it's one of my favorite spots in the area for taking photographs. I took this photo of the dome of the Santo Stefano Church at the end of last summer, and I don't believe I've shared it here ...

Photo Friday: Sleeping Beach Umbrellas

Last weekend I was sitting down on the beach in Amalfi, and I loved the way the beach umbrellas looked lined up and wrapped tightly for the night. Since I had some time to kill, I entertained myself by experimenting a bit with my camera. I like how this image came out, with the red and white ...

Photo Friday: A Midsummer Night Swim in Amalfi

Last summer, not long after I got my new Nikon point and shoot camera, we went for a night swim in Amalfi. I brought my little tripod along and took a few photos on the beach while others were still swimming. For some reason that I can't recall any longer, I never downloaded any of the photos on ...

A Summer Morning in Atrani

A beautiful Saturday morning and I needed a few photos for an article I was writing on the town of Atrani on the Amalfi Coast. There was only one thing to do ... a photo outing! It was a peaceful morning, and I saw only a few people while I wandered through town taking photos. Head over to Charming ...

Photo Friday: Listening to the Doves

A lot can happen while you're trying to park on the Amalfi Coast. Or, more specifically, while you're waiting for someone else to find and maneuver the car into an impossibly small parking space. The other day, I was sitting on the wall on the side of the road while the Tour Guide worked his magic ...

Photo Friday: Amalfi Bougainvillea

I love it when the bougainvillea blooms on the Amalfi Coast each summer, and I know I'm not alone in this passion. Photo Friday this week is dedicated to Saretta from Amid the Olive Trees, who stopped by last week's Positano Bougainvillea post and left a sweet comment asking for more bougainvillea ...

A Saturday in Amalfi

Now that the weather is sunny and warm, daily life in Amalfi is starting to take on its summer feel. The harbor is busy with boats, buses are lined up three rows deep and there are people everywhere enjoying the town. A couple of weeks ago I was in Amalfi on a beautiful Saturday, and I took some ...

Just autumn and one perfect maple tree. I wasn’t Just autumn and one perfect maple tree. I wasn’t expecting to catch any colors yet here in Nebraska, but this is the best kind of surprise for an autumn lover. 🍁
When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it reminded me of one of my favorite Italian words: garbuglio. It means a tangle or a mess. But not just any mess, a conspicuous and intricate mess. I think we can all find a few of those around these days. Now you know what to call it in Italian!
Completely unplanned, I ended up getting off the b Completely unplanned, I ended up getting off the bus in Pontone this morning instead of Minuta. The steps up between these two hamlets of Scala are quite steep, but it was a perfect autumn morning. Brilliant sun but a cool north breeze and the air full of the honeyed scent of sweet alyssum (which I can spot thanks to Giacomo from @cookeatsquare!) and birdsong. As a little reward to myself for the unexpected effort, I meandered a bit to enjoy the crimson vines and some sunflowers dancing in the breeze. Autumn is coming - even on the Amalfi Coast! 🍂
You have to look close for any signs of autumn in You have to look close for any signs of autumn in Amalfi. Surrounded mostly by olive, lemon, pines, and other types of evergreen trees, we don’t have much for fall foliage right in the center of town. Oh but I look! In the golden moments of the morning just as the sun hits Amalfi for the first time, I’m out there imagining autumn colors. 🍂
This month’s newsletter continues the travels in This month’s newsletter continues the travels in Italy with American poet H.W. Longfellow in 1828 as he made his way down to Naples. Plus a look at Grand Tour volcano tourism and a bonus of 19th-century tips for now not to be a tourist. Link in bio!
Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂

It was fun to see the grapes on the same vines just before harvest begins. Swipe to the right to see the same grapes back in May. Happy autumn!
