Photo Friday: Sleeping Beach Umbrellas

Last weekend I was sitting down on the beach in Amalfi, and I loved the way the beach umbrellas looked lined up and wrapped tightly for the night. Since I had some time to kill, I entertained myself by experimenting a bit with my camera. I like how this image came out, with the red and white ...

Photo Friday: A Midsummer Night Swim in Amalfi

Last summer, not long after I got my new Nikon point and shoot camera, we went for a night swim in Amalfi. I brought my little tripod along and took a few photos on the beach while others were still swimming. For some reason that I can't recall any longer, I never downloaded any of the photos on ...

A Summer Morning in Atrani

A beautiful Saturday morning and I needed a few photos for an article I was writing on the town of Atrani on the Amalfi Coast. There was only one thing to do ... a photo outing! It was a peaceful morning, and I saw only a few people while I wandered through town taking photos. Head over to Charming ...

Ready for the Beach in Amalfi!

Just before June came to end, I finally made my primo bagno, or the first swim of the season in Amalfi. Better late than never, right? I love swimming in the morning when the water is still calm and the beaches much quieter compared to the afternoon. I arrived in Amalfi early on a Saturday morning, ...

A Saturday in Amalfi

Now that the weather is sunny and warm, daily life in Amalfi is starting to take on its summer feel. The harbor is busy with boats, buses are lined up three rows deep and there are people everywhere enjoying the town. A couple of weeks ago I was in Amalfi on a beautiful Saturday, and I took some ...

A Kayak Lesson in Atrani

A few weeks back I was walking through Atrani on a bright and sunny April day. The water was clear and shimmered in an intense mix of green and blue. I stopped to take a look at the beach, which still hadn't been cleaned up and moved back into place after winter. The scene was thorougly winter, with ...

Wisteria Wonderland in Positano

Last spring Rosa from the Bell'Avventura blog in Positano wrote a post filled with gorgeous photos of the wisteria season in Positano. I was smitten. Wisteria is one of my favorite spring flowers, and I love how the sweet scent fills the air this time of year. I just had to experience the beautiful ...

Lunch at Amalfi’s Bar Gran Caffè

After a long winter on the Amalfi Coast, it's hard to stay inside when the warm weather finally arrives in the spring. This is the time of year when it's warmer outside most days than inside the old stone houses on the coast. When the sun shines in Amalfi, it's an easy choice to stay out and enjoy ...

Sunday Mornings in Amalfi

I love Sunday mornings in Amalfi, especially this time of year when the sun warms the promenades along the sea and it seems like the whole town is out for a passeggiata. There's something special about Sunday mornings that you can feel walking through Amalfi. People are dressed just a little nicer ...

Rough Seas in Amalfi

November 1st arrived this year with maltempo, or bad weather, all across Italy. We woke up the morning of the first to a strong, warm scirocco wind blowing from the southeast. The wind brought with it a sudden spike in temperature and a very rough sea in Amalfi. The waves were crashing on the Marina ...

Photo Friday: With Love from the Amalfi Coast

Earlier this week I shared some photographs I took this summer at the Santa Croce beach in Amalfi, one of my favorite spots on the Amalfi Coast. This picture is from the same day, but is very special to me. I have a knack for finding heart-shaped rocks here on the Amalfi Coast, ...

Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂

It was fun to see the grapes on the same vines just before harvest begins. Swipe to the right to see the same grapes back in May. Happy autumn!

This morning was a little cloudy when I went out f This morning was a little cloudy when I went out for my morning walk like I do most mornings in Amalfi. Down the coast, across the Gulf of Salerno, rays of light were shining right on the city of Salerno. I had set out with Salerno on my mind because it was there that 82 years ago today—on September 9, 1943—the Landing of Salerno began during WWII. My Grandpa was in the Army during the war - a lot of it in Italy. Yet he would never speak of where he was or what he did, and certainly had no desire to ever see Italy again after the war. While he probably wasn’t in that first landing in Salerno, he would have been somewhere in Italy, perhaps further south in Calabria or in Sicily. I always think of him during these days and wonder about those hard experiences he must have had in Italy. And very grateful for what he and so many fought for and endured.

If you ever visit Salerno, south of the city there’s an Allied War Cemetery that is a moving and important place to visit. 🤍
Have I ever shared one of my favorite poems about Have I ever shared one of my favorite poems about Amalfi? It’s by the American poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933). It’s simple and it’s heartbreaking - like first loves so often are. But I think about it often, especially on night walks in Amalfi.

Night Song At Amalfi

I asked the heaven of stars
What I should give my love —
It answered me with silence,
Silence above.

I asked the darkened sea
Down where the fishers go —
It answered me with silence,
Silence below.

Oh, I could give him weeping,
Or I could give him song —
But how can I give silence,
My whole life long?
