Out & About: Riding the Waves in Salerno

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Wild Boat Salerno

Earlier this week I made a trip to Salerno, the city that greets you when you leave the Amalfi Coast road on the Sorrento Peninsula. I like Salerno – it has big city charm, beautiful architecture, a waterfront perfect for an evening passeggiata along the port, and it is much safer and easier to navigate than nearby Naples. I arrived by boat at the Porto Turistico in Salerno just as the sun was beginning to set.  (More pictures coming soon!) As I was heading into town, one fishing boat out of the long line of blue and white boats bobbing along the port caught my attention. What a wild paint job! Do you think it makes it go faster? I suppose that’s one way to make it easier to find your boat!

I've never been to Salerno before…past it, round it, over it but never in it!

Ciao Laura! Thank you so much for your very kind words. The feedback from readers like you keeps me photographing and writing more and more! Grazie! 🙂

Ciao Peter! That's it! It reminded me of something and you nailed it right on the head. It's so funny because you know that boat only goes putt-putt-putting along the Amalfi Coast.

Ciao Leanne! I like Salerno. I haven't spent a lot of time there, but I always have a good time when I do. The Duomo is outstanding!

It’s a topic that has been on my mind a great deal lately, as it is like clockwork every six months as I go through my usual round of check ups. She spoke so gently and simply about how when she looks back on the experience now she sees all the gifts that it brought her - something that hit me on a profound level. Gifts.

I don’t know exactly why I’ve hung on to this little appointment card from Tuesday, June 15, 2021. It was for my first ultrasound where the breast cancer was found. It’s not exactly the sort of thing to be sentimental over. Looking at it today—three years later—and feeling very grateful for everything being clear and good after the latest tests, I thought of this song. This card is a little souvenir of a terrible year. But, after that recent conversation, I realized that I don’t look back at it that way anymore. Because it was also a colorful year in so many ways. Maybe I’ve hung onto it because I needed to realize that the biggest gift I can give myself is to remember the gifts. Thanks, Sally! 💙

I love having a birthday in June. But since I will be back in Nebraska with family for my birthday later this month (for the first time in years! 🎉), I’m making sure I really sit and notice everything I love about this month in Amalfi. And, yes, I’m one of those people who stretches out birthday celebrations for as long as possible! 💙
