August is Vacation Time on the Amalfi Coast

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Beach Umbrellas

It’s August and the beaches are getting mighty crowded here on the Amalfi Coast. Those of you who have traveled in Italy this time of year know that the month of August is when Italians go on vacation. While some cities might be a bit less crowded, that is certainly not the case for the Amalfi Coast. The Italians come here! I just love the brightly colored beach umbrellas along the Amalfi Coast, and I couldn’t think of a more appropriate banner image for the month of August. This month the photo is a group of umbrellas from Amalfi, but right now every beach along the coast is full of bright single- or multi-colored umbrellas fluttering in the sea breeze. You can tell when summer has reached its peak by the number of beach umbrellas, and right now in Amalfi there is hardly a free spot!

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Beach Umbrella Mountains

You might have noticed around the blogosphere that many of your favorite Italian blogs have gone on ferie, or holiday, for the month of August. While a tempting idea, there are too many fun events, festivals and things to do this time of year that I want to share with you all here on Ciao Amalfi. I have decided, however, in order to balance my writing workload (why does everything have to come in August???) with a bit a my own time under the beach umbrellas, that I will take a break this August from my regular weekly Sunday Shout-out and Tempting Tuesday features. That doesn’t mean I won’t be tempting you all with photos and videos from the Amalfi Coast this month, it just means my posting schedule will be a bit more relaxed—a perfect reflection of these lazy and hot days of August!

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Orange Burst

I snapped these photos of the bright orange beach umbrellas last weekend at Santa Croce, which is one of my favorite beaches on the Amalfi Coast. I love taking photos of the beach umbrellas, and I am sure there will be more coming this month!

Buon agosto!! Happy August!!

Those umbrellas are beautiful!! There is nothing better than Italian beach culture! Admittedly, even I like the cultural practices of lounging in the sand, usually packed together with other people like sardines, wearing lots of jewelry and a barely visible bathing suit, while eating a bagged lunch of spaghetti con sugo and panini con melanzane e mozzarella. Mmmm. Where else but right here in the South?

Love your blog. Thanks for bringing it to us!

    HI Laura
I've just come to your blog via Maya's 'A Beach Lover's Place' and so glad to be here. I love Italy and unfortunately have not been there since 1996. I have a photo I took of Atrani very similar to your's from July 22. Well I have 'followed' your blog and will be happy to come back and dream some more. Thanks Julie

Ciao Lisa! I think of your description of the beach umbrellas everytime I see them now. Mmm… gelato! 🙂

Ciao Barbara! I wholeheartedly agree! The panini con melanzane e mozzarella is a lovely beach treat, especially when accompanied by a fresh white wine with peaches. Ah… summer! So happy to have found your blog, too!

Ciao Anne! Yes, I can understand why the beaches get crowded this time of year, too. There are other beaches in Amalfi that aren't as crowded, but Marina Grande (where I took that picture) is very busy these days. I am definitely recharging the batteries… thanks!

Ciao Julie… or should I say Ciao Ruby! 🙂 I love your blog! Thank you so much for stopping by to say hello and introduce me to it. Come back and dream as often as you want, and I hope you can make it back to Italy very soon!

Ciao Linda Lou! Thanks! There are some great restaurants overlooking the beach in Amalfi, and it is such a beautiful spot. Glad you enjoyed your day here!

Celebrating Independent Bookstore Day with a newsl Celebrating Independent Bookstore Day with a newsletter inspired in part by this beautiful song by @samantha_whates & @mgboultermusic. While I could never decide on just seven bookshops for my whole life, I’m sharing about seven remarkable indie bookshops I visited earlier this month in Bath and London. The link is in my bio, but swipe through the photos here for a look inside - each bookshop is tagged if they’re on Instagram. But definitely give them all a follow:

While it’s been a beautiful Easter Sunday in Ama While it’s been a beautiful Easter Sunday in Amalfi, I’m still processing all of the incredible experiences from my trip to England last week. And, thanks to “Square Haunting” by @francescawade, I am still very much haunting the streets and squares of London. Her book opens with this marvelous quotation from Virginia Woolf’s diary written 100 years ago today on April 20, 1925 (photo 1). It captures just what it felt like I was doing days ago - including a saunter through Bloomsbury Square (photo 2). Diving into this book over the weekend has felt like I’ve been able to linger even longer in those rare April days of spring blooms and blue skies in London.

This book caught my eye immediately at the ever so charming @sherlockandpages in Frome (photos 4 & 5). How could it not when it was surrounded my one of my all time favorite books (“Letters to Camondo” by @edmunddewaal) and one of the best books I read last year (“All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me” by @patrickbringley)?

Hope that your Easter weekend has been a lovely one - with a little bit of “street sauntering & square haunting” wherever you may be!
Just had an unforgettable spring day visiting the Just had an unforgettable spring day visiting the Jane Austen House in Chawton as an early birthday present for myself.(Quite a bit early as it’s not until June.) But earlier this year I decided to have a Jane Austen theme for the year, especially since 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth in 1775. I do love a theme! Seeing the place where she wrote all of her novels, her tiny twelve-sided writing table, a quilt she made, and sitting in the garden listening to the birds sing is altogether something I’ll never forget. ✍️
Watching the colors of the sea and the fish swimmi Watching the colors of the sea and the fish swimming and thinking of the deep connections of old friends. And this poem by Mary Oliver. Hold tight to the friends who always find a way to say “Look!” and laugh in astonishment.

Mysteries, Yes
— by Mary Oliver

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the
mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will
never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the
scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.

Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.

Let me keep company always with those who say
“Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.
Mary Oliver wrote in a poem that “happiness isn’t a town on a map.” But when the little bit of wisteria blooms in Amalfi, I’m not so sure. 💜
