Ceramic Shopping in Ravello

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Ceramic Mug

The temperatures have gotten hot hot hot here on the Amalfi Coast, and everywhere you go you hear, “Fa caldo!” (It’s hot!) Despite the temperatures, I had some shopping to do, and headed to Ravello on Tuesday for market day.  I found some lovely linen shorts that will be great for these hot days, but I couldn’t stay long under the breezeless and cramped booths. On my way through town I ducked into one of my favorite ceramic shops Pascal Ceramiche d’Arte to get out of the sun and enjoy a bit of beauty. I saw this incredible mug that just had to come home with me. How could I resist starting my day in such a beautiful way?

The Amalfi Coast is renowned for its ceramic traditions, especially Vietri sul Mare, and you can find ceramic shops in every town and along the twists and turns in the Amalfi Coast Road. Ravello has a reputation for fine ceramics, and its winding streets and piazza have many excellent shops. Pascal Ceramiche d’Arte is one of my favorites because it has an amazing selection of stunning table wares, tiles, fountains, tabletops and artistic pieces. Sometimes I just stand and stare!

This store is so beautiful it is like a museum, and I think I could spend hours in here admiring the beautiful work. Next time you are in Ravello, stop by Ceramiche d’Arte and say “ciao!” to Pasquale Sorrentino, the shop’s friendly and knowledgeable owner.

      Thanks for the info!

I love ceramics, but rarely buy any, as I paint my own, but sometimes I see something that I know I could not replicate.

I started ceramics in 1993 and made so much that when I moved in 2000, I reduced my stuff and also my style at changed, and also when I moved here in 2005, I got rid of even more, did a car boot sale, gave some to my family…

But it does look absolutely brilliant ..so just maybe 🙂

Ciao Welshcakes Limoncello! (I just love your name!) I am looking forward to seeing ceramics in Sicily one of these days.

Ciao Food Hunter! You will enjoy it! Yes, Tuesday is a good day to go to Ravello if you want to catch market there as well. (Market is Wednesday in Amalfi and is much bigger.)

Ciao KC! I feel the same way, and it took me a good long time to settle on which mug to bring home with me. They were all so beautiful!

Ciao Anne! I didn't know you made ceramics. How fun! You would go crazy over some of the intricate designs on the ceramics in this shop. I just stare in wonder! I would love to be able to paint my own. Do you still do it often?

Ciao Linda! I have noticed some of your beautiful pieces in the photos on your blog. You would love the style here on the Amalfi Coast!

Ciao Lost in Sicily! Are there a lot of ceramics where you live in Sicily?

Ciao Chuck! I should warn you then that we both have expensive tastes in ceramics! 🙂

    Hello,
My husband and I got Married in Ravello in 2012 and bought a few dishes as did my sister and we would both like to see about extending our sets but I am not certain how to go about that. Is there somewhere I could see what you are offering now to make sure the patterns are still there? and see what we might want?

    All the best,
    Rebecca

Hi Rebecca, Do you happen to remember what ceramic shop you went to? The best bet will be to call them. Nearly all the shops have people who speak English, so they should be able to help over the phone or via email. Good luck!

While I could never decide on just seven bookshops for my whole life, I’m sharing about seven remarkable indie bookshops I visited earlier this month in Bath and London. The link is in my bio, but swipe through the photos here for a look inside - each bookshop is tagged if they’re on Instagram. But definitely give them all a follow:

While it’s been a beautiful Easter Sunday in Ama While it’s been a beautiful Easter Sunday in Amalfi, I’m still processing all of the incredible experiences from my trip to England last week. And, thanks to “Square Haunting” by @francescawade, I am still very much haunting the streets and squares of London. Her book opens with this marvelous quotation from Virginia Woolf’s diary written 100 years ago today on April 20, 1925 (photo 1). It captures just what it felt like I was doing days ago - including a saunter through Bloomsbury Square (photo 2). Diving into this book over the weekend has felt like I’ve been able to linger even longer in those rare April days of spring blooms and blue skies in London.

This book caught my eye immediately at the ever so charming @sherlockandpages in Frome (photos 4 & 5). How could it not when it was surrounded my one of my all time favorite books (“Letters to Camondo” by @edmunddewaal) and one of the best books I read last year (“All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me” by @patrickbringley)?

Hope that your Easter weekend has been a lovely one - with a little bit of “street sauntering & square haunting” wherever you may be!
Just had an unforgettable spring day visiting the Just had an unforgettable spring day visiting the Jane Austen House in Chawton as an early birthday present for myself.(Quite a bit early as it’s not until June.) But earlier this year I decided to have a Jane Austen theme for the year, especially since 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth in 1775. I do love a theme! Seeing the place where she wrote all of her novels, her tiny twelve-sided writing table, a quilt she made, and sitting in the garden listening to the birds sing is altogether something I’ll never forget. ✍️
Watching the colors of the sea and the fish swimmi Watching the colors of the sea and the fish swimming and thinking of the deep connections of old friends. And this poem by Mary Oliver. Hold tight to the friends who always find a way to say “Look!” and laugh in astonishment.

Mysteries, Yes
— by Mary Oliver

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the
mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will
never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the
scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.

Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.

Let me keep company always with those who say
“Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.
Mary Oliver wrote in a poem that “happiness isn’t a town on a map.” But when the little bit of wisteria blooms in Amalfi, I’m not so sure. 💜
