Christmas in March?

The current talk of the town in Amalfi has been the Christmas lights, which are not only still up but also are still turned on most nights. Very strange since they are usually taken down by the Feast of San Biagio at the latest (beginning of February). Recently, news came out that the lights had remained up because a Japanese movie is being filmed in Amalfi and along the coast, and the producers had paid to keep the lights up for longer. Last night all the lights were lit up over the main street of Amalfi, which you can see in the photo at the top. As we walked up the street it was as if the city had one voice. Standing in the open shop doorways and along the steps leading off the main street, everyone was admiring and talking about the lights. And we found ourselves taking part in little conversations about the lights all the way to the top of Amalfi before we turned around and admired the lights on the walk back down to Piazza Duomo. If the Christmas lights are going to be up, I heartily agree with the Amalfitans that they might as well be appreciated! I have a weak spot in my heart for lights on trees, and this neon palm tree was my favorite Christmas decoration in Amalfi this year.

I will let you all know if I find out the name of the movie!

Ciao Scintilla! Yes, I know… Christmas lights on Easter is a bit much. Are there still lights up in Positano? It also explains why all the Christmas lights have been on some nights in Atrani in the past couple of weeks. I found out some information about the film, and I just posted it now. Check it out! Looks like a big hit in Japan.

Too funny. I did notice that the lights were up when we there 3 weeks ago. I then went to look for the presepe in the fountain I had taken a photo of last Jan but it wasn’t there! Now I know why!! I just assumed these people really like their christmas decorations 😉

Glad I found your blog. I’ll have to add you to my blog roll, if you don’t mind.

    Ciao, K

Ciao Karen! Thanks for your comment and introducing me to your wonderful blog! I am still making my way … piano piano … around the blogosphere. I am very happy to find another blogger in Campania! And, yum, your cookbook is already on my wish list. Sure, I am happy if you add me to your blogroll, and I just did the same. Just today I was thinking of soon writing a “Campania blog round-up” post, because I know many of my family and friends would love to read more about the area. I will be sure to include your blog now!

Yes, I am happy to have the mystery of the Christmas lights solved. 🙂 Is this, by any chance, the fountain presepe that you were looking for in Amalfi?

How have you liked living in the Naples area over the past two years? I would love to hear your thoughts! I look forward to corresponding!

When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it When I walked by this ceramic table in Praiano, it reminded me of one of my favorite Italian words: garbuglio. It means a tangle or a mess. But not just any mess, a conspicuous and intricate mess. I think we can all find a few of those around these days. Now you know what to call it in Italian!

The steps up between these two hamlets of Scala are quite steep, but it was a perfect autumn morning. Brilliant sun but a cool north breeze and the air full of the honeyed scent of sweet alyssum (which I can spot thanks to Giacomo from @cookeatsquare!) and birdsong. As a little reward to myself for the unexpected effort, I meandered a bit to enjoy the crimson vines and some sunflowers dancing in the breeze. Autumn is coming - even on the Amalfi Coast! 🍂
You have to look close for any signs of autumn in You have to look close for any signs of autumn in Amalfi. Surrounded mostly by olive, lemon, pines, and other types of evergreen trees, we don’t have much for fall foliage right in the center of town. Oh but I look! In the golden moments of the morning just as the sun hits Amalfi for the first time, I’m out there imagining autumn colors. 🍂

Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂

It was fun to see the grapes on the same vines just before harvest begins. Swipe to the right to see the same grapes back in May. Happy autumn!
