Early Morning on the Amalfi Coast

Early morning is an enchanting time on the Amalfi Coast. I’ve been a morning person my entire life (heck, I was born at 6:01 am!), and I love opening the shutters to find the first rays of sunlight peeking over the Lattari Mountains. Breathing in the still-cool night air, I can see the bright sun sending its wake up call to each city it reaches, and hear the echoes of birdsongs and early morning church bells as they fill the valleys.

This morning the silence was complete. I sat and waited quietly for the day to begin. A lonely crow floated in the cool mountain breeze, his crackly voice filling the valley above Atrani. I watched the little cars in the distance silently making their way up and down the twisty roads. I wondered where those people were off to for the day?

Before long the sounds of daily life start arriving at my window. The honking of the first SITA buses as they careen around the tight corners, the sounds of the big boats coming in and out of the port of Amalfi, the clattering sound of the mules as the workers begin another hard day hauling material up and down the stone steps, and, of course, the ubiquitous dog barking.

And so another day begins on the Amalfi Coast. The bright sun and clear skies tell me it will be a gorgeous day. Warm and sunny wishes to all of you from the Amalfi Coast!

That photo is great… It makes me want to move to THAT side of a province instead of the side I'm on side 😛

Gorgeous photo! I'm an early bird too, and I'm wondering, do you have a hard time striking a balance between wanting to walk up and enjoy the morning and adapting to the Italian habit of eating late, socializing until late, etc.?

Ciao Lisa! You're sweet! Yes, I think it doesn't usually work out that way, but sometimes I wonder. 🙂

Ciao Emily! Thanks for stopping by and for your very kind words. I am happy to have found your blog as well, and I will be checking in a The Keeping Time often to follow along. Lovely to meet you!

Ciao KC! Yes, that has been quite an adjustment for me. Dinner with friends here usually keeps us out until at least 1am. Fortunately, my boyfriend is also a morning person, so he understands where I'm coming from. My solution right now is strong black tea for those mornings when I can't quite get going! 🙂

Ciao Anne! Oh, yes, I love the evening just before sunset when the sky turns beautiful colors and everything seems just a bit clearer. I couldn't choose a favorite time of day! 🙂

Ciao Saretta! It was a peaceful morning. I think it was especially striking to me after the chaos of August. So many more people and so much more noise during that month. It is very peaceful again now!

Ciao Karen! Lo hai scritto perfetto … penso. 🙂 I have so much to learn! It's nice to have a few quiet moments in the mornings like this before the hectic day begins. Miss you over here! 🙂

It’s a topic that has been on my mind a great deal lately, as it is like clockwork every six months as I go through my usual round of check ups. She spoke so gently and simply about how when she looks back on the experience now she sees all the gifts that it brought her - something that hit me on a profound level. Gifts.

I don’t know exactly why I’ve hung on to this little appointment card from Tuesday, June 15, 2021. It was for my first ultrasound where the breast cancer was found. It’s not exactly the sort of thing to be sentimental over. Looking at it today—three years later—and feeling very grateful for everything being clear and good after the latest tests, I thought of this song. This card is a little souvenir of a terrible year. But, after that recent conversation, I realized that I don’t look back at it that way anymore. Because it was also a colorful year in so many ways. Maybe I’ve hung onto it because I needed to realize that the biggest gift I can give myself is to remember the gifts. Thanks, Sally! 💙

I love having a birthday in June. But since I will be back in Nebraska with family for my birthday later this month (for the first time in years! 🎉), I’m making sure I really sit and notice everything I love about this month in Amalfi. And, yes, I’m one of those people who stretches out birthday celebrations for as long as possible! 💙
