Tempting Tuesday: Summer boats on the Amalfi Coast

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Boat View

Amalfi

One of the things I love the most about the Amalfi Coast is being near the sea again. Those of you who popped over to Italytutto.com to read my Behind the Blog interview now know that I grew up for many years on the beach in Florida and spent my undergrad college days in America’s Sailing Capital, Annapolis, Maryland. While never an avid boater or fanatical swimmer, I have to say I am more at ease and happier when I live close to the water. The sounds, the smells, the lifestyle, and, of course, the boats.

I love how the ports fill up with boats during the summer months, many of which are just passing through. Walking along and looking at the clever, fun, and sometimes bizarre names people give their boats is one of my favorite evening activities.

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Seagull and Boat

On Capri I found this big seagull who seemed to be admiring the boats just like me. Tomorrow we are renting a small boat and exploring up and down the Amalfi Coast all day. I can’t wait! While I have been out on boats a lot here, this will be the first time on a small private boat where we can go wherever we want. I am looking forward to discovering the little coves, tiny beaches and grottos along this beautiful coastline!

Have a great time! I love being near the sea too, I grew up spending the whole summer every year at the beach. I've lived most of my life near coasts, but I lived in also Nebraska (Hastings) for a time and I really yearned for the ocean while I was there.

That should be "I also lived in Nebraska," I need to learn to proofread!

that could be very romantic…are you going with someone special? I grew up near the Lake (Lake Ontario) and that's where I find serenity when I need it along the cliffs of the Scarborough Bluffs especially in the summertime when the sailboats are out.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me),
It's always our self we find in the sea.

Hope you had a wonderful time on your private boat tour…can't wait to see some pictures of that! And I couldn't agree more, everything is better when you are close to the sea.

I envy the endless sunshine you're getting in Italy. We're having only rain here in Toronto.

Ciao KC! Thanks… I did! 🙂 (Pictures coming soon…) I didn't know you lived in Hastings. We're having one of those small world moments since I have family living nearby in Kearney. How far are you from the sea in Sessa Aurunca?

Ciao Lucia! Yes, what a romantic idea. (Already making plans…) I went with my boyfriend and several members of his family, and we had a blast! One of the most peaceful places I found while living in Minnesota was on the shores of Lake Superior. So beautiful! I would love to see Lake Ontario someday, too.

Ciao Lisa! That poem is so beautiful and so perfect. Thank you for sharing! I did toss a rock in for you (or two or three!), and I found something that you will love. 🙂

Ciao Chuck! I agree! It was such an amazing way to see the coast. I would highly, highly recommend renting a boat to really see the coastline at its best.

Ciao Anne! I hope you can come visit soon, too. I need to get over to Positano to visit Scintilla! 🙂

Ciao Karen! It was incredible – absolutely breathtaking! I will be posting pictures soon. (I took 275!!) I have been enjoying your posts on the beaches near you in Sicily. Is it really crowded there this time of year?

Ciao Jen! How about we swap some rain for some sun? The garden here would love that! Sending sunny thoughts your way…

It’s a topic that has been on my mind a great deal lately, as it is like clockwork every six months as I go through my usual round of check ups. She spoke so gently and simply about how when she looks back on the experience now she sees all the gifts that it brought her - something that hit me on a profound level. Gifts.

I don’t know exactly why I’ve hung on to this little appointment card from Tuesday, June 15, 2021. It was for my first ultrasound where the breast cancer was found. It’s not exactly the sort of thing to be sentimental over. Looking at it today—three years later—and feeling very grateful for everything being clear and good after the latest tests, I thought of this song. This card is a little souvenir of a terrible year. But, after that recent conversation, I realized that I don’t look back at it that way anymore. Because it was also a colorful year in so many ways. Maybe I’ve hung onto it because I needed to realize that the biggest gift I can give myself is to remember the gifts. Thanks, Sally! 💙

I love having a birthday in June. But since I will be back in Nebraska with family for my birthday later this month (for the first time in years! 🎉), I’m making sure I really sit and notice everything I love about this month in Amalfi. And, yes, I’m one of those people who stretches out birthday celebrations for as long as possible! 💙
