Out & About: Art Show in Amalfi

Ciao Amalfi Coast Blog Pepe Art3

Walking through Amalfi the other day, I noticed this strange little sign advertising a mostra d’arte, an art show. Fortunately, I had a few moments to enjoy walking through this colorful and fun little exhibit of work by the artist Giuseppe Palermo, or Pepe, presented by the Presso Azienda Soggiorno e Turismo of Amalfi. I am not sure if art exhibits happen here every summer, but this is the first I have seen. I hope there will be more! The beautiful courtyard is a perfect location, and one that is often just passed by.

This show was called “Famiglia Gialla,” or “The Yellow Family,” and all of the paintings and sculptures featured one or more of these little yellow figures. Each of the figures had a definite sense of “melancholy happiness,” as Pepe describes it, which was evident as I walked around the courtyard both wanting to laugh and to frown. It was a strange combination of emotions!

While I caught this show right at the end (it closes today), you can visit the artist’s website and view his work in more detail. Be sure to check out the fun video of a recent exhibition in Ravello at the Hotel Palumbo featuring the work of Pepe, paintings by the American artist Lucy Mc Gillis, and interesting works on glass by Emilio D’Agostino. (Great practice for those of you studying Italian!)

Ciao Chuck! We're beginning to roast here in the summer heat, but all is going well. I grilled chicken last night outside to avoid cooking inside, and it was so yummy. The beach in Amalfi was packed yesterday! This is my first July here. Today I am staying inside where it is much cooler than outside! I liked the art display, too. Glad you enjoyed! 🙂

Ciao Lost in Sicily! It was a fun little show. There were a couple of pieces I would have considered buying if I had a place to put them. I hope there are more art shows this summer, too! 🙂

It’s a topic that has been on my mind a great deal lately, as it is like clockwork every six months as I go through my usual round of check ups. She spoke so gently and simply about how when she looks back on the experience now she sees all the gifts that it brought her - something that hit me on a profound level. Gifts.

I don’t know exactly why I’ve hung on to this little appointment card from Tuesday, June 15, 2021. It was for my first ultrasound where the breast cancer was found. It’s not exactly the sort of thing to be sentimental over. Looking at it today—three years later—and feeling very grateful for everything being clear and good after the latest tests, I thought of this song. This card is a little souvenir of a terrible year. But, after that recent conversation, I realized that I don’t look back at it that way anymore. Because it was also a colorful year in so many ways. Maybe I’ve hung onto it because I needed to realize that the biggest gift I can give myself is to remember the gifts. Thanks, Sally! 💙

I love having a birthday in June. But since I will be back in Nebraska with family for my birthday later this month (for the first time in years! 🎉), I’m making sure I really sit and notice everything I love about this month in Amalfi. And, yes, I’m one of those people who stretches out birthday celebrations for as long as possible! 💙
