The Big News!

My Deep Blue Sea Near Positano

There are certain colors that are fixed in my memory, that I feel I can see even when my eyes are closed. While I’ve always loved living close to water, the Atlantic Ocean in Florida when I was young and the Chesapeake Bay while I was in college, it wasn’t until I came to the Amalfi Coast that I fell in love with the color of the sea. One of the reasons it that it  changes so dramatically along the coastline from shades of light green to deep turquoise to an almost electric blue.

There’s a deep blue that is my personal favorite, and the spot that always takes my breath away is off the coast of Positano near the Li Galli islands. I could get lost in that color of the sea. While a photo doesn’t be to do it justice, I took the photo above yesterday near the Li Galli islands on a beautiful, clear day.

This color blue will never escape my memory for a new and very happy reason. Would you like to know the big news?

Engaged on the Amalfi Coast!

I’m engaged!

My boyfriend asked me the night before my birthday, and gave me a beautiful sapphire and diamond ring. What an emotion! You can see the ring there … so of course I said yes. It has been quite an adventure over the past four and a half years since we met, and I’m so happy to see where life will lead us next! Yesterday on the boat, I looked down at the ring on my finger and realized that the sun sparkling on the sapphire made it the same deep blue color of the sea that I love so much. I know the photo above isn’t very clear, but I’ll take some better shots soon and share them along with all of the stories to come. I am deeply happy and excited for this new adventure, and very grateful for having so many dear friends and family to share with it along the way!

Thank you, Linda! I loved hearing that you also have a sapphire and diamond engagement ring. How fun! I love the significance of the sapphire as an engagement ring, and it’s fun how this ring has made me want to learn more about jewelry design in the 60s and the revival or Art Deco designs. It might just be the perfect ring for an art historian that has a weak spot in her heart for Art Deco everything! 🙂

Congratulations! I’m a new reader, visiting from Michelle’s site, Bleeding Espresso, but even so, I’m happy for you and I love the comparison between your beautiful ring and the deep blue of the sea there. I’m a newlywed too – in my 50’s so I know engagements are always a giddy, happy thing.

Ciao Una! I was thinking about you this summer and hoping you were enjoying a beautiful time in Atrani. The weather has been unusually great this summer, but it’s getting really sticky again now. Let’s swap … the garden could use a bit of your rain rain rain since we haven’t had any in too long to remember. Happy you’ll be staying longer next year!

Would swap right now Laura, I think you have the best deal although I do live in the beautiful County Waterford here in Ireland and love my home. Ideally six months of the year in Italy, May – Oct. would suit me perfectly. Maybe someday!!! Enjoy rest of Summer. Ciao 🙂

While it’s been a beautiful Easter Sunday in Ama While it’s been a beautiful Easter Sunday in Amalfi, I’m still processing all of the incredible experiences from my trip to England last week. And, thanks to “Square Haunting” by @francescawade, I am still very much haunting the streets and squares of London. Her book opens with this marvelous quotation from Virginia Woolf’s diary written 100 years ago today on April 20, 1925 (photo 1). It captures just what it felt like I was doing days ago - including a saunter through Bloomsbury Square (photo 2). Diving into this book over the weekend has felt like I’ve been able to linger even longer in those rare April days of spring blooms and blue skies in London.

This book caught my eye immediately at the ever so charming @sherlockandpages in Frome (photos 4 & 5). How could it not when it was surrounded my one of my all time favorite books (“Letters to Camondo” by @edmunddewaal) and one of the best books I read last year (“All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me” by @patrickbringley)?

Hope that your Easter weekend has been a lovely one - with a little bit of “street sauntering & square haunting” wherever you may be!
Just had an unforgettable spring day visiting the Just had an unforgettable spring day visiting the Jane Austen House in Chawton as an early birthday present for myself.(Quite a bit early as it’s not until June.) But earlier this year I decided to have a Jane Austen theme for the year, especially since 2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth in 1775. I do love a theme! Seeing the place where she wrote all of her novels, her tiny twelve-sided writing table, a quilt she made, and sitting in the garden listening to the birds sing is altogether something I’ll never forget. ✍️
Watching the colors of the sea and the fish swimmi Watching the colors of the sea and the fish swimming and thinking of the deep connections of old friends. And this poem by Mary Oliver. Hold tight to the friends who always find a way to say “Look!” and laugh in astonishment.

Mysteries, Yes
— by Mary Oliver

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the
mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will
never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the
scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.

Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.

Let me keep company always with those who say
“Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.
Mary Oliver wrote in a poem that “happiness isn’t a town on a map.” But when the little bit of wisteria blooms in Amalfi, I’m not so sure. 💜
