An Autumn Walk in Ravello

Autumn is a glorious time of year to visit the Amalfi Coast. One of my favorite spots to walk during any season is the town of Ravello located high in the mountains overlooking the coastline. If you enjoyed the Autumn Walk in Scala, you're going to love coming along on a beautiful autumn walk ...

An Autumn Walk in Scala

Autumn arrives quietly on the Amalfi Coast. Slowly the grape vines take on a rich red hue and the leaves of the sycamores turn a golden brown in the evening light. It's an exercise in looking closely at first, but before long the landscape is dotted with autumn colors. This year's warm and dry ...

October – Slow, slow!

The colors and scent of autumn bring to my mind two things - my mother, who taught me to treasure nature and its many wonders, and the poetry of Robert Frost. As it would happen, they are both very much related since she was the one to introduce me to Frost's writing with a small book of his poems ...

The First of October in Positano

While clearing the breakfast dishes from the kitchen table yesterday morning, I heard on the news that this September was the warmest recorded in Italy in last 150 years. Looking out the window at a slice of vivid blue sea sparkling in the sunshine, I thought that was just about the nicest way to ...

A Saturday in Amalfi

Now that the weather is sunny and warm, daily life in Amalfi is starting to take on its summer feel. The harbor is busy with boats, buses are lined up three rows deep and there are people everywhere enjoying the town. A couple of weeks ago I was in Amalfi on a beautiful Saturday, and I took some ...

Wisteria Blooming in Ravello

After a couple of years of rainy and cold springs, the Amalfi Coast is finally having the mild and beautiful spring weather that it's famous for. The wisteria has been blooming for weeks already along the coastline, and I've been enjoying its sweet scent filling the air. While the wisteria in ...

Wisteria Wonderland in Positano

Last spring Rosa from the Bell'Avventura blog in Positano wrote a post filled with gorgeous photos of the wisteria season in Positano. I was smitten. Photo Friday: Signs of Spring

It was wonderful to arrive back on the Amalfi Coast earlier this week and find that I didn't miss the arrival of spring. This is one of my favorite times of the year, watching the trees bud and blossom. In Amalfi on Wednesday I was looking down at the sun sparkling on the sea and noticed the bright ...

Photo Friday: Savoring the Stillness in Amalfi

I love the spring light on the Amalfi Coast. Or maybe it's just that I see things during the month of February, when the town of Amalfi has taken a deep breath and closed its shutters and shops for a bit of winter rest, that are easily missed during the busier times of the year. Last week I was ...

An Early Spring Day in Amalfi

For those of you who work from home, or have in the past, you'll know that weekends don't come around every week like they do for many people. Sometimes there's that extra project that comes in last minute. Or maybe you're trying to catch up or get ahead. As a freelance writer, it seems like there ...

Snowy Mountains on the Amalfi Coast

Remember all the humidity I was talking about last Friday? Well, over the weekend the north wind started to blow and temps dropped enough for the rain to turn to snow at the tops of the Lattari Mountains high above Scala, Ravello and along the Amalfi Coast. Isn't it beautiful? This afternoon I took ...

Mmmhmm autumn is definitely my favorite season. 🧡 This morning I woke up a bit earlier than my alarm and looked outside somewhat perplexed. The entire sky, the town—everything—had a burnt orange hue. A hurried lacing up of the shoes and still bleary eyed, but I just had to see it better for myself. It was a glorious sunrise. Now the rain has just gently started falling and I’m in full autumn ecstasy.

Later I’ll return to the piano to pick up where I left off yesterday learning this beautiful autumn waltz by @andreavanzo_composer. 🍂

It was fun to see the grapes on the same vines just before harvest begins. Swipe to the right to see the same grapes back in May. Happy autumn!

This morning was a little cloudy when I went out f This morning was a little cloudy when I went out for my morning walk like I do most mornings in Amalfi. Down the coast, across the Gulf of Salerno, rays of light were shining right on the city of Salerno. I had set out with Salerno on my mind because it was there that 82 years ago today—on September 9, 1943—the Landing of Salerno began during WWII. My Grandpa was in the Army during the war - a lot of it in Italy. Yet he would never speak of where he was or what he did, and certainly had no desire to ever see Italy again after the war. While he probably wasn’t in that first landing in Salerno, he would have been somewhere in Italy, perhaps further south in Calabria or in Sicily. I always think of him during these days and wonder about those hard experiences he must have had in Italy. And very grateful for what he and so many fought for and endured.

If you ever visit Salerno, south of the city there’s an Allied War Cemetery that is a moving and important place to visit. 🤍
Have I ever shared one of my favorite poems about Have I ever shared one of my favorite poems about Amalfi? It’s by the American poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933). It’s simple and it’s heartbreaking - like first loves so often are. But I think about it often, especially on night walks in Amalfi.

Night Song At Amalfi

I asked the heaven of stars
What I should give my love —
It answered me with silence,
Silence above.

I asked the darkened sea
Down where the fishers go —
It answered me with silence,
Silence below.

Oh, I could give him weeping,
Or I could give him song —
But how can I give silence,
My whole life long?
