Festival of Sant’Antonio, Amalfi

    Last Sunday was the festival day for Sant’Antonio di Padova (St. Anthony of Padua), which is one of the most unique religious celebrations in Amalfi. The church of Sant’Antonio in Amalfi is located between Amalfi and Atrani, and because of this location the religious procession takes ...

A Welcome Sheep and Goat Invasion

  Yesterday evening while I was finishing up my work for the day, I heard the tinkling sound of the little bells that the goats and sheep wear here on the Amalfi Coast. For some reason that sound just makes me inexplicable happy. Smiling, I stopped to listen as they passed through the small ...

The Black Sheep

  The sound of the wind blowing through the mountain valleys, the sweet tinkling sound of sheep bells, terraced gardens of olives, lemons and grape vines, unbelievable peace and quiet – these are the reasons I love walking along the ancient pathways on the Amalfi Coast. Yesterday, while ...

La Festa di San Matteo in the Rain

When I stepped off the boat in Salerno the rain was gently falling and I realized I was not at all where I thought I was. Perhaps it was due to the maltempo, or bad weather, but the boat I was on from Amalfi stopped at the Molo Manfredi instead of the Porto Turistico in Salerno. The problem being ...

What 31 days of January morning walks looks like. What 31 days of January morning walks looks like. It’s been gorgeous and windy and stormy and wild - and everything in between. Should I pick a different spot to take a photo a day next month?
Non Amalfi Coast question. Do you wake up in the m Non Amalfi Coast question. Do you wake up in the morning with music or a song in your head? I do nearly every morning and it’s curious to me what shows up. Usually it’s something I’ve been listening to, but sometimes it’s really random, like someone’s left the music room door slightly ajar in the brain. This morning it was a jaunty version of “Loch Lomond” from the 1940s sung by Maxine Sullivan. (You’d think that would be from the random category but I actually listened to it yesterday.) So that’s what was swinging about in my head as I took a walk early this morning. 🎶

Musing On The Roaring Ocean
by Robert Burns

Musing on the roaring ocean,
Which divides my love and me;
Wearying heav’n in warm devotion,
For his weal where’er he be.

Hope and Fear’s alternate billow
Yielding late to Nature’s law,
Whispering spirits round my pillow,
Talk of him that’s far awa.

Ye whom sorrow never wounded,
Ye who never shed a tear,
Care-untroubled, joy-surrounded,
Gaudy day to you is dear.

Gentle night, do thou befriend me,
Downy sleep, the curtain draw;
Spirits kind, again attend me,
Talk of him that’s far awa!

This morning—after four days of rainy and cloudy mornings—I watched sunrise over the Cilento coastline across the Gulf of Salerno. Late morning it started raining again and it hasn’t stopped. This little pocket of beauty was exhilarating!
