Snow on the Amalfi Coast!

Amalfi Coast Travel Snow December 2014

– A glorious snowy sunrise on the Amalfi Coast

We woke up to the most beautiful surprise this morning. Snow on the Amalfi Coast! What an incredible way to remember the last day of 2014. While we occasionally get snow up in the mountains during the winter, I could tell this was a special snow. I could see snow on the beach in Atrani and snow by the red faro in Amalfi. This was really a snow!

A snowy Villa Cimbrone in Ravello

The ruins of the Church of Sant’ Eustachio in Scala had a dusting of snow and way down in Amalfi by the sea the bell tower of San Biagio was also white. In the photo below, far on the left, you’ll even see snow on the pier that juts out into the port. My husband says it has been about 30 years since there was snow on the beach in Amalfi!

We watched the few brave drivers out slowly … very slowly … navigating the road down from Ravello. That’s a tough stretch of road even in good weather. I couldn’t imagine trying to drive that road this morning!

And if you look closely in the photo below you’ll see a snow covered beach in Atrani. It was still snowing when I took this photo and it wasn’t until after that I noticed the white beach.

But I think the prettiest view of all was the snowy scene in Scala. The snow-covered terraces on the mountains above the village created stripes as the backdrop to the winter scene. It was like a postcard winter setting!

A wintry scene in Scala

Of course I had to go out. I waited just a bit and thankfully there was a short break in the strong wind. It was still -3 C, but without the wind and bundled up it wasn’t too bad for a short walk.

Out I go!

Crunching up and down the steps in the snow was a little more challenging than usual, but the beautiful view and quiet scenes were well worth the effort.

I love the way a dusting of snow changes everything. I suppose that is especially the case in places where it doesn’t snow all that often like the Amalfi Coast.

I couldn’t take many photos of the view across the valley to Ravello since a gust of wind arrived that nearly knocked me off my feet and set me crunching through the snow back home.

Winters on the Amalfi Coast require boots that are good for the rain and cold weather … and sometimes even the snow!

Crunch crunch crunch …

Before going back inside I had one more mission … find Puffy! He’s one of our outside cats who spends the day inside. It took a few times calling him before he came out of hiding. He’s a smart cat though, and was completely dry.

Is there anything cuter than a fluffy orange cat in the snow?

He was ready to come inside and warm up though! He’s all curled up and toasty now.

Seeing Puffy in the snow reminded me of the last time we had a bigger snow like this, which was in 2009. Puffy was only about a year old and had so much fun trying to catch snowflakes.

I hope the last day of 2014 brings you many beautiful surprises!

Drama in the Summer Sky

Amalfi Summer Weather Storms

The weather has been dramatic this week with sudden thunderstorms several times a day followed by blue skies and the sunshine peeking out. Yesterday evening at sunset another storm rolled in from the sea. But just before it arrived the sky was full of the most spectacular clouds.

Amalfi Coast Travel Dramatic Sunset

It was a majestic moment with the clouds tinged ever so slightly pink and lightening flashing over the sea in the distance. The layers of clouds, the different textures, the subtle colors and the rumble of thunder.

It wasn’t long before the sky darkened and the storm arrived. The grumbling storm and pouring rain stuck around most of the night. This morning the skies were clear again, but as I type I can hear more rumbling coming over the mountains.

The weather forecast predicts nice summer weather to return very soon. Nature has put on quite a show this week on the Amalfi Coast!

Waterspouts on the Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast Travel Summer Storms

From blue skies and beach weather to thunderstorms and waterspouts. I guess that’s just the unpredictability of early summer for you! On Sunday the weather turned suddenly quite bad in the late afternoon with lightening, massive thunder that rolled through the valley and the rather unusual occurrence of waterspouts. The first one I spotted was the tiny one above, but I could see there were more.

At one point there were three that we could see, but mostly they were quite small. The waterspout in the photo above was the largest, but it only lasted a few minutes. It was at the peak of its strength when I took that photo, but by the time I turned the camera and refocused to take a horizontal shot it had already disappeared.

Sunny skies or dramatic storms, this coastline is always stunningly beautiful. But I know everyone on holiday would much prefer the beach weather, so here’s hoping the nice weather returns soon!

Beautiful blues on the Amalfi Coast

Leave me alone with a view like that and some sort of photographic device and you can bet that I’ll try to capture it in some way. That’s what I did with my several year old simple Samsung phone this morning when looking out at the blue sky and sea. What a glorious spring day!

It’s just so beautiful today that I had to try to take a few photos to share! In the sunshine it looked like they hadn’t come out at all, so imagine my surprise when I downloaded them and found these. And they don’t even begin to show what a beautiful day it really is!

Winter Sunshine

Marina Grande Beach Amalfi

Glorious sunshine in Amalfi

There’s nothing quite like when the sun comes out in February after a rainy spell. There’s the warmth of the sunshine to dry everything out, but also that sense of spring on its way. It’s hopeful, warm and irresistible. And not just for the Amalfitani! We took an afternoon stroll in Amalfi this afternoon and had fun spotting all the people out enjoying the sunshine – tourists, locals, fishermen and kids playing soccer on the waterfront promenade.

Sunshine and Shadows in Amalfi

Sunshine and shadows while out walking in Amalfi

When the sun shines the best way to enjoy it in Amalfi is with a walk overlooking the beach and along the harbor. The water was temptingly blue, but still quite cold.

Yet there were people wading along the water’s edge with their winter pants all rolled up. A few people were out on kayaks, too.

But the really smart people had claimed a spot on the Marina Grande beach and were soaking up the sun. It was strange being dressed in winter clothes looking down on a scene from the summer!

Early sunbathers on Marina Grande beach

There were more people in Amalfi than in past weeks, perhaps couples taking advantage of the lovely weather for a romantic Valentine’s weekend trip to Amalfi. You’d have to know where to look, but the first signs of the coming busy season are starting to pop up here and there around town.

The sunshine on the steps of the Duomo had attracted a nice crowd of more urban sunbathers. It’s a good spot!

We’re a little starved for sunshine here, but that’s mostly because we’re so spoiled the rest of the year. But once February arrives … spring is around the corner!
