Photo Friday: Amalfi at Sunset

View of Amalfi Harbor

A couple of weeks before I left Italy for this trip to America, I walked for the first time along the Via Maestra dei Villagi, an ancient footpath that connects Amalfi with the hamlets of Pastena, Lone, Vettica and high up in the mountains to Tovere and Pogerola. We walked it at sunset from Lone down to Amalfi, and just as we walked through a covered passageway next to the Church of Santa Maria del Pino we caught this evening view of the harbor of Amalfi from high above. I miss moments like this when I’m far away!

What a wonderful Amalfi blog to stumble upon! I cant wait to dig in and read.

If you only had 2 days in Amalfi, what would you do? Would you please refer me to any older posts on your site that might help me make a fabulous itinerary? I’ll be traveling there with my husband and 4 month old daughter in a month. Thanks!! Jessica

Beautiful! Laura, I tried to email you, but couldn’t. My 2 daughters, a friend, and I are coming to Italy for a once in a lifetime (probably) trip and I have a question for you. We have reserved Casa Floreal through Amalfi Coast rentals and I wondered if I made a wrong choice in not getting a place closer to the beautiful sea. We all love the ocean and would sunbathe and swim and of course thoroughly enjoy the view and proximity to the sea. It is in Pastena Lone. I spent well over 100 hours researching apartment rentals in Tuscany, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast. At this time, we’d lose our deposit, but I’m wondering if you could give us some information about Pastena Lone and if you know of any other 2 bedroom apartments close to the sea under E200/night (we need it for 6 nights May 26-June 1). I hope you don’t mind me asking, but it sounded like you were OK with people asking travel questions. Thanks for any help you can give us!! We are so looking forward to our amazing Italy vacation!

      Hi Susan,
Thanks for your message. Sounds like you have a fabulous trip to Italy coming up! As far as suggesting apartment rentals, it sounds like you’ve done far more research than I have! It’s not something I know much about in order to make recommendations, especially not with prices. Certainly I’d expect to pay more for a rental in the center of Amalfi than in Pastena. It really just depends what you’re looking for during your holiday. If you’d like to spend the days on the beach or easily walk to hop on a ferry to Capri or Positano, then being right in Amalfi is probably your best bet. But if you’re looking for holiday in a lovely local spot away from the crowds in Amalfi with gorgeous views, then Pastena seems like a good choice. There are public buses that pass by frequently there. Good luck with your travel planning!
      Warm wishes,
      Laura

Even within the private terraced gardens, it’s remarkably secluded. Walking through the gardens, I couldn’t imagine the great good fortune of being able to write and create here as Gore Vidal did for over 30 years. This is a place that certainly inspires!

Today is an unspeakably sad day for the Amalfi Coa Today is an unspeakably sad day for the Amalfi Coast after the tragic bus accident this morning in Ravello where Nicola Fusco, a young bus driver only 29 years old, lost his life. Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause and I won’t share the upsetting details. The road to Ravello is currently closed and it’s not clear when it will reopen. Nicola was a kind, talented, and experienced driver—the third generation of drivers in his family—a family very close to ours. My husband has been a guide with all three generations and watched Nicola grow up. This is something that shouldn’t happen, shouldn’t ever happen, but it’s something we all fear here. Our hearts are with the Fusco family and to everyone who Nicola’s life touched. 🖤

Here was a quiet moment in Atrani before the celebrations began. ⚽️
